Customer Reviews

Powerful learning toyThe Spirograph was a magical, steady go-to toy for whiling away my kid-hours ... before computers. I would run through a ream of typing paper like a paper shredder ... sometimes with carbon paper just to pass my creations around . Now as a physicist & grandpa, I relate to the Spirograph as a mathematical experiment that teaches important relationships.I bought the big Spirograph set for my granddaughter. My granddaughter has a creative streak, not particularly mathematical, but she spins the Spirograph in a perfectionist artsy way. The Spirograph is a fantastic elementary school entr e into critical thinking, proportionality and creativity. It's a trial and error superstar. Some combinations are pleasing to the eye, others are a visual dissonance. It's been a delight to watch her progression ... "What do you think about this, Grandpa!" ... she quietly discards ones that aren't ready for prime time Grandpa eyes. It's been great fun suggesting variations that she takes away and goes to work on with her own twist and fancy. You can see her mind working as her choice of 2 templates and a starting `point' reveals unexpected patterns within patterns .This set has all the bells and whistles of the original and then some. It's the 50th anniversary set. The number and configuration of templates just make a fascinating learning toy. 5she was very happy to get one even 30 yearsWife wanted one since she did not get one when she was younger.... she was very happy to get one even 30 years later 5spirographthe super spirograph i gave it 3 stars number 1 the spiro-putty gets hard and do not stick anymore i went to the store and had to get LOCTITE fun-tak it works better. number 2 you think after all the spirographs that was made the numbers of the holes in the wheels should be in black so you can see the numbers and the lines better. number 3 the pens ink skips or to light they should be more dark. thank goodness and have a lot gel pens that is better and bic pens it does make a lot of great design and you will lose track of time. 3Not Just For KidsBought it as a Xmas gift for my 68-year old father who likes to draw/paint and is very analytical and mathematically inclined. This was perfect because it is all based on sine/cosine wave functions. So, kind of like the way one can read Huckleberry Finn either as a fun child's story in elementary school, or on a higher, more analytical level in college, so may this be used as a toy, or as an interesting diversion that even a grumpy old accountant can enjoy. (Just kidding, he's a nice guy!) 5And I purchased some ink joy gel pens which works great so I will never ...I bought this for the kid inside of me, to play with my grandchildren. I am very impressed with the changes. I remember as a child with the original spirograph the pins wouldn't stay in place causing much frustration because I couldn't get a design to be complete without the wheels skipping. My second complaint was when I ran out of ink, I could not find a pen on the market that would fit in the holes so I had to push really hard on the pen to get it to contact with the paper... With this spirograph it comes with the putty which does help keep it in place, you can still use push pins if you want it extra secure along with some cardboard. And I purchased some ink joy gel pens which works great so I will never have to worry about running out of ink, and I now have a wider variety of colors to choose from. I know my grandkids and I will have many hours of fun. It's a great investment. 5Artistic and RelaxingThis is the 2nd time that I purchased this product. I bought one for myself last year and this year I bought one for our oldest daughter (56 years old). The basic set was her favorite toy as a child and I will be surprising her this Christmas. The Deluxe Jumbo set give you endless possibilities to create different designs and unique images.Besides allowing you to pursue your artistic interests, this is very calming and therapeutic after a long day. Much like the current coloring book craze, the Spirograph gives you the opportunity to unwind while producing some interesting graphic images.I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to create art pieces or anyone who just wants to relax. 5Buy...Black Paper...Gel PensI remember when the first generations of gel pens for use on black paper came out, gosh about 2 decades ago, I very quickly thought of Spirograph. I bought a Spirograph set and we tried many gel pens but the first generation of gel pens were not very good. It went from dozens of companies making gel pens and black paper to only a handful. This generation of gel pens has made a great comeback and we see a lot of companies getting back in to the business of making gel pens and black paper. For gel pens on black paper the best are the Sakura 38176 10-Piece Gelly Roll Assorted Colors Blister Card Moonlight Gel Ink Pen Set and the ink glows in the dark but if you really want to add to your Spirograph fun I recommend also getting what I call "The Castle", the TEKwriterUSA Gelwriter Gel Pen Set with Pop-up Case, 100-Count (27104-D), it has every kind of gel pen you could imagine and great for every shade of paper from black to white but the ink does not glow in the dark like the Sakura pens. Be aware the Gelwriter pens have a pump action tip, you don't want to use to much pressure. For black paper I recommend getting the Wausau Astrobrights Heavy Duty Paper, 24 lb, 8.5 x 11 Inches, Eclipse Black, 500 Sheets (22321) but there are many other black paper options.Sakura has come out with smaller version of the Gelly Roll set that has the best colors for black paper in the set Sakura 38174 5-Piece Gelly Roll Assorted Colors Blister Card Moonlight Gel Ink Pen Set, Dawn Pack, it eliminates some of the darker colors from the larger set. I would also recommend getting some extra fine pens for the more intricate designs on white paper. Some good ones are the Pilot G-Tec and Hi-Tec series, the Uni-Ball Signo series and the Staedtler Triplus Fineliner series. Metallic ink markers also work well, just make sure the tips fit the holes. 5Wanted to like it, but . . .Like many reviewers here, I had fond memories of the old "Super Spirograph" back when the concept was new -- and was disappointed to find that this is not that toy. Well, it's a reasonable facsimile, but only if you're very, very careful in how you use it, and most children, unfortunately, are not.For starters, the plastic rings and gears are much thinner than they were in the original. This makes trying to keep the teeth lined up a tricky operation requiring a light touch. Most kids in the age range for which this toy is intended (typically 8-10 year olds) haven't yet developed that degree of manual finesse. Then, the rings move around, making it almost impossible to accurately complete any patterns. I, too, miss the little push-pins which held the rings and paper in place in the old Spirograph -- they did work much better than the allegedly-sticky putty that now comes with the kit. You can use pins through the drawing holes in the plastic parts, if you use a styrofoam posterboard behind your paper, but these holes are bigger than the old pin-holes, and the parts still tend to wobble somewhat. The 8-year old to whom I gave this set was intrigued when we first started exploring it, but she quickly grew frustrated, and then bored, when she couldn't complete any patterns on her own, without the pieces sliding around and ruining them. I finally figured out a solution that involves basically temporarily gluing the ring to the paper with rubber cement -- this works fairly well, but is messy, smelly, and fussy. If we can't have pins, surely there must be a better way to do this. All in all none of these would be fatal flaws if the price had been more reasonable -- say $15-$25. But for $40 I was quite disappointed. In concept, this is still a great toy. Once, it was also a great toy in execution, but sadly, no longer. 3Don't get too excitedI was really excited when I saw this so I grabbed it and am a little sorry now. This is a well presented set of plastic gears that may give you some issues-depending on how you use them and how heave handed you re (LIGHT TOUCH is what s needed here). The wheels are ok but one of mine is defective (52) as the first couple of holes are way too close to the teeth and always skip. What really torqued me off was the extension pieces for the huge frames. They fit together loosely and a couple of my "F" pieces never had the holes punched out.The thing you need to keep in mind if buying this set-ESPECIALLY for children the large frame pieces are really delicate. They must be taken apart and put together with extreme care or you ll end up snapping off the locking mechanisms. One last bit-I don't know why people are complaining about the putty to hold the rings. There ARE NO HOLES FOR PINS TO HOLD THE RINGS in these new sets unless people are using finishing nails to use the big holes that were on the old sets but never meant for the pins to go though. This is 2015, not 1967. The putty is far better than the pins were I grew up having to use. The pins always had to go into cardboard or something similar and the ring would jiggle around decreasing accuracy-the putty holds the pieces securely tho it is a royal pain to try & piece together the huge frames since they do no lock together and at least as far as my set is concerned, some of the holes were not due cut so I have tabs of plastic preventing the use of some of the pieces. Go search for WILD RINGS...you'll pay a bit more but that is a quality set, not like this. 3Cheap construction, rock hard putty renders entire product unusableThe putty that comes with this kit is hard as a rock. Its completely unusable. You're supposed to use it to adhere the rings to the paper.edit: Received my replacement product. Not only was the putty in the second kit also hard as a rock, I found that the cheap plastic gears and rings didn't sit flush with the writing surface and caused the gears to constantly pop up as you're drawing. I tried going slower, I tried going faster, pushing harder, using a feather touch. Nothing seemed to help. The rings are so flimsy that if you press too hard trying to get them to adhere to your work surface, they are gonna snap. This is just a very cheaply made product that is an exercise in frustration. Save yourself the headache and get Wild Gears instead. 1
