Customer Reviews

Finally finished itI started on this puzzle in January 2010, worked on it on and off until August 2011, then got frustrated and covered it up with a tablecloth until February 2013. I figured that it was now or never to get it done. I had done about 1,000 pieces up till then, mostly the corners with the red curtains, and also some of the stonework in the upper left. I got stuck trying to do the flooring on the bottom, and gave up for about a year and a half. Restarted last month, and worked on it about 6 hours a day, and finished it today, March 21st. I figure the whole thing (sorting pieces, rearranging pieces, putting pieces together) took about 500 to 600 hours. I guess I'm an average rate puzzler. You could probably do the thing in 3 months if you do 5 or 6 hours a day. I agree with some of the other reviewers; some of the colors on the box cover do not match the colors in the puzzle. The dark golds on the box cover are brown in the puzzle (picture frames), and some of the grays are more greenish. The blues and purples seem to be more or less OK. The tans are more of a gray. It is a big puzzle, 60 inches by 41 inchs, and it takes up a lot of space. Like most people I had to put extra pieces of wood on my table to fit it. I used 2 ft by 2 ft pieces of wallboard to arrange my pieces; got them at Home Depot - they have a nice gray color, no reflection or glare, and cost about $4 each. They are a little heavy, but at least if you bump against them, the pieces don't go flying off. You can get about 250 to 300 pieces on each section. All of the puzzle pieces fit together; but some are the exact shape (see other reviewers) and I got about 6 pieces that I had to reset because they were pretty close image wise to the "true" piece. Lighting was a bit of a problem; it's hard to get lighting without getting glare; and you need good lighting to do this puzzle. The best thing I used was one of those inverted halogen lights that look like an upside down dinner plate. That bounced off the white ceiling and gave me a more diffuse light. I should have used two of them, one on each side of the puzzle. I think the hardest part of the puzzle is the upper center section, with all the arches and the gray figures, at least for me. Anyway, the thing is finally done, and I have to admit, it does look pretty impressive. Cheers! 5Super challenge because of the shear size and complexity and ...I am working on this puzzle right now. I'm a fan of Ravensburger puzzles and have completed several of their 3,000 piece and 1,000 piece puzzles. This thing is in a whole different league though! Super challenging because of the shear size and complexity and nuances of the picture. I've been chipping away at it here and there and will continue to do so over the coming months. I custom built a puzzle board from plywood to create a surface to build the puzzle on. 4Excellent Challenging PuzzleViews of Modern Rome is an excellent and beautiful puzzle for those of you looking for a challenge. After completing several 1000 piece puzzles, each taking no more than a week to finish, I felt it was time to tackle something more complicated so I purchased this puzzle. I immediately completed the border but then was intimidated by the sheer number of pieces and size and consequently did not resume the puzzle until 3 years later. Once I started again it took 2 months working several hours a day to complete, around 200 hours total, so keep that in mind as this is not a short-term project. This puzzle teaches you to have lots of patience organizational skills. Before you even begin you will need a lot of space. I had a spare room and spread all the pieces out on a large carpet on the floor, with the puzzle itself being assembled on a large table. In addition, as others have said strong lighting is a must. I used 3 100-watt equivalent daylight compact fluorescent bulbs which helped bring out the colors of the pieces for easy sorting. As always I sorted the pieces by color and first began by assembling the pieces for the borders of the paintings which were gold in color. Then I treated each painting as a puzzle itself. Because of the puzzle's size, I found it helpful to temporarily tape certain pieces/sections in place to prevent shifting which will invariably occur. That kept the pieces in the right location and orientation. At the end I worked on the curtains, which were not as bad as I initially thought. While there are many red pieces, there are several shades (dark red, bright red, pink) which indicates what part of the puzzle they belong. Since there are so many red pieces I further sorted them by shape: X-shaped, Y-shaped, H-shaped, 2 corners, 3 corners, and 4 corners. This made searching for specific pieces easier.Hanging the puzzle up is a challenge in and of itself. Unless you're willing to spend a fortune to get a frame for a puzzle this size your best bet is to preserve and hang the puzzle yourself. To preserve the puzzle I used 16 oz Mod-Podge with the gloss finish which is just the right amount of glue needed. It works the same as Ravensburger Puzzle Conserver but is much cheaper. I used a foam brush to apply to the whole surface and the crevices. After the puzzle dried I flipped it and used the remaining Mod Podge and Elmer's glue to glue 4 20X30 inch pieces of cardboard to the back which completely covered the 40X60 inch puzzle. Originally I just wanted a single large piece of cardboard to attach to the back but that size is only available over the internet which would result in expensive shipping because of the cardboard's size. Using smaller pieces was an affordable alternative. After the cardboard dried I applied 6 Command Picture Hanging strips to the back, 4 at the top, 2 at the bottom. They hold well and don't damage the wall. I then centered the puzzle on the wall and attached it where its been hanging ever since. The beauty and size of this work of art will make any room look good. 5I saw reviews with comments about dull colors and replies to those reviews that "you just ...The only reason for three vs. five stars is colors on the puzzle. The colors on the puzzle pieces don't match the colors on the box picture, they are much duller (e.g., instead of bright crimson reds it really more dark brownish-burgundy). It made it hard in the beginning trying to figure out, which area of the puzzle each particular piece belongs to. Before we bought it, I saw reviews with comments about dull colors and replies to those reviews that "you just need better lighting." Unfortunately, better lighting did not help. So, if not for duller colors, it would have been great puzzle. 3There is not words to describe it.(UPDATE)WARNING: I was reading the reviews and noticed that people who rated it 1 star commented on it being dark, blurry, difficult to do, boring, etc. This is for people who are die hard fans. My mother also struggled with this. There are large areas that are largely one color and very dark. Sometimes pieces that fit were in the wrong place. This is not simply to pass the time. As for it being blurry... I understand what your saying. It does seem blurry close up. It is a blown up image, kind of makes sense, but once complete it looks amazing. And the fact that you put it together gives it sentiment and makes it even more beautiful.(END UPDATE)One of my mother's hobbies is putting puzzles together. She is very particular about brands, claiming there is a large difference in the quality. Of course, one of her favorite brands is Ravensburger. For Christmas I decided to get her this one. She had never done anything larger 2000 pieces. Best gift buying decision I have ever made in my life. She LOVED it!It took almost 4 months and the entire dining room table. Be warned, this thing is huge and will take up a lot of space. My father brought in a huge outdoor table (about/over 7 ft) so she could lay out all the pieces while constructing it on the dining room table. When she finished we flipped it over (not an easy feat. we put a huge cardboard under it, held it tight, and just flipped, sounds easy but be careful) and glued the back with puzzle glue. It took 3 bottles (We did 2 light layers). After it dried (takes maybe an hour but we waited an entire day) we took it to this local store that mounts and frames paintings. The outer frame is a dark rustic goldish hue that made accents in the painting stick out and the inner frame is a dark wood with a barely there tint of red to bring out the curtains and dark edges of the puzzle. If you do get it framed do not get glass over it. Most of these store will have this special gel that they apply over it to protect the painting and it will keep the quality and the this-is-a-puzzle look of it all.It is now the center piece of the living room and one on the first things you see when entering the house. It is absolutely gorgeous and the fact that it is a puzzle adds mystique and originality. People are always fascinated by it. I will try to post a picture of it soon with a link if anyone is interested. 5the picture listed in not what the puzzle looks like now. The colors are much much darker so ...As others have mentioned, the picture listed in not what the puzzle looks like now. The colors are much much darker so you can't see a lot of the details anymore. The actual puzzle image has also been CROPPED on all sides, so you can't see most of the figures on top above the pillars..... Not sure what would possess Ravensburger to ruin an awesome puzzle like that, but there you have it .... I had the original, but some pieces got lost in the move. The old one was much better. 1Love the detailing on this puzzleRavensburger makes some great puzzles and I've done this and the tower of babel. My only regret is that ravensburger doesn't have too many 5ks out there. This looks great on the wall. 5Worth the moneyHas a couple of flaws, but overall it was a nice experience and a good challenge. Finished and framed, we get a lot of compliments on it. 4Beautiful and challengingBy far the most beautiful and challenging puzzle I have ever done! There are some pieces that are the same shape. Got to the last piece and it was the right fit but wrong color. Upon looking for the right piece found two others in the wrong place. Glued together using Modge Podge for puzzles and a three inch brush made by Modge Podge. No flipping over the puzzle necessary! Slide the puzzle onto foam board, glued right over the top. Gave it a beautiful brush finish and stuck to the foam board perfectly. It is now framed and hanging in my living room! Absolutely love it and looking forward to doing my next ravensburger puzzle! 4Quality puzzlingRavensburger has such nice quality, standard jigsaw puzzles. This is my second large piece Ravensburger, the first being the 9000 piece Bombardment of Algiers. This is far easier, with completion time of around 3-4 weeks compared to 3-4 months. Some is a learning curve. But I think mainly there are so many distinct areas that makes it easier to solve. Algiers is all water and sky. This has pillars, deep reds, skies, gold frames...Before you buy, make sure you have the space to solve it. I have two methods. The first is a giant piece of cardboard left over from a dining room set that I have cut to the size of a kitchen table, a little bigger than this puzzle size. When I have company over, I can slide it under a couch. The second was to go to home depot or lowe's, by a piece of plywood, and have them cut it into 2 or 3 sections, then screw in some mounting brackets and place on a folding table. If you use cheap plywood you'll need a fabric to cut over it. I opted to go with birch, at $45, but I'll have it forever now. Then unscrew the mounting brackets to store when not working on a puzzle. Then I sort, and place on 10 3ft by 3ft pieces of sturdy cardboard face up. Eventually sorting and sorting again until you are left with the pieces you need to solve. Otherwise you waste so much time looking for a half frame half sky piece that you sorted into the wrong pile.Patterns are also repeated here, for a hint, the two giant pillars in this puzzle are inverses of themselves, so if unsure if a piece is the right fit, you can trace it out from there. 5
