    Mouse brown ponies...I had the Misty and Stormy set when I was growing up and I found my Misty horse but lost Stormy. My daughter is into collecting Breyer horses now and I purchased this because it came with Stormy and the book. However, the stock photo must be of the older model, like the one I had when I was a child because what I received were two ponies that were painted mouse brown and white. Not the beautiful palomino and orange chestnut color. They resemble the horses depicted on the cover of the book. Which I guess is nice if you haven't had the old set but is disappointing if you remember the vivid color they used to be. 3Wrong colorI love this book, and the horses are great and very detailed. But... the color is way off. They are much much darker than expected and my daughter was pretty sad that it wasn't a good match for my 20+ year old set (that looks like the color in the picture). They are well made and if I wasn't expecting the perfect color I'd probably rate 5 stars. I guess that's why I got it on sale? 3The Breyer Horse is a continued tradition! Great Product!This product was a gift for a 13 year old who is horse crazy. She was absolutely crazy in love when she opened this package. I think she has read the book twice now in two weeks. I can remember loving horses at her age, and I had a small collection of the Breyer horses back then in the 1970's. Some of those horses followed me through the years to be passed down to my daughter, who did not seem to appreciate horses half as much as I did. But it goes to show that the Breyer horse is made to last through the decades to be passed down through the generations from person to person. Although my daughters did not share my love for the horse, they did care about the stories I shared about the Breyer horses I passed down to them, so mush so, that they proudly display those horse and pass those stories down to their children, who will probably be passed those same horses someday. 5The great Breyer quality I loveThis set is fantastic. I can't wait to give this to my 'horse loving' niece for her birthday. She is going to be 8 and I think this is the perfect set for her age. The quality is wonderful and you can't go wrong with Breyer collectibles. I collected them myself as a little girl. I still have most of them and they are in excellent condition though I played with them non stop. 5Skip the bookThe pony is great. The book, not so much. I read it to my daughter and had to edit quite a lot of the dialogue. The descriptive narrative was surprisingly well-written, but the dialogue was terrible. Poor attitudes, negative/dysfuntional relationships, references to crude gestures, unnecessary words (butts, heck, etc), and some awkward innuendo that was just inappropriate and unnecessary. I was glad that I was reading it with my child instead of letting her read it alone. You'd do much better to buy the Breyer plastic Shetland pony by itself and then purchase higher quality literature. Misty of Chincoteague (and 2 sequels) by Marguerite Henry, or Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. Both of those have the same appeal for horse lovers, but without the low-brow writing. Books are like food - we are what we eat. Feed your kids well-written books with high standards of literature and morals, and you'll have healthier kids with smarter brains and a positive outlook on life. :) 2Doesn t stand!This overpriced is horrible quality. Not only is it much thinner plastic than the old school Breyer horses, this one doesn t even stand! It falls over right away. I purchased other Breyer horses for Christmas and they stand okay. Not too well but they stand up. This one falls over in a split second no matter what. Dollar store quality. 1Lovely statutes and book, but take care with unpacking!The statues and book were very nice, but the packaging was difficult to handle without ripping one's hand. The statues were securely wired to the box and required pliers, wire cutters, and much care to avoid injury. 4Perfect!I bought this for my nephew who loves horses. I think it s going to be perfect for him. Love the details and quality of the horse. 5When A "Sure Thing" Bet on a Horse Really is a SureThingThe book is a classic, (and still readable and engaging). The Breyer models are high quality. The set has keepsake value, play value, and a lot of Oohhh! value, especially for a horse loving girl like our granddaughter. A sure thing. 4Horse-crazy never ends!!I first read Misty of Chincoteague Island as a nine-year-old girl at the advice of my mother; and now, fifty-one years later, that story has alot to do with why I'm still cleaning five stalls every morning after the weather is too tough for my beloved horses to endure sleeping outside the night before. I recommended that my daughter read that story as a child, and she also grew into adulthood clinging to her horse-craziness. So when that daughter asked me for book suggestions to read to her two-year-old daughter at bedtime, I immediately thought of Marguerite Henry's books. She responded in caps, "OMG! HOW DID I FORGET THOSE BOOKS!!!"; and I found this book AND the Breyer Horses here on Amazon minutes later!My Daughter never played with dolls, she played with toy horses and pickup trucks, and this grandaughter of mine is exactly the same; but it was more than awesome to hand those horses and that book to her today. It was incredible to see the light in her eyes as she waited for me to unwind all the wire around the legs, and to see her carrying Misty and her Baby for the rest of the day was more than wonderful.Breyer Horses are excellent, Marguerite Henry put words to a love that some of us are lucky enough to have in our lives no matter what, and today I passed the torch on to the fourth generation of women in my family, all enraptured with the magnificent dignity of the horse.And the packaging was excellent and the shipping was fast!
