Customer Reviews

7x Mag? Not even close.A year or so ago, I bought two Carson portable microscopes here at Amazon.I bought the Carson MM-300 and the Carson MM-24. Both were wretched bad and nearly worthless. Besides lousy optical quality, they had virtually no eye-relief. Picture looking at something through a nail hole. I wasted my money.I had forgotten the Carson name and bought this magnifier without knowing any better. Carson calls this a 7x magnifier. It's not even close. The real magnification is about 3x. I have spent time looking at assorted rulers and grid papers. The magnification is THREE times, and not even remotely as high as the claimed 7. I almost went with the 10x model, but decided it would be too strong for my needs. If I had known that Carson hypes their specs 60%, I might have gone with the 10x model. It was cheaper, too, which adds insult to injury. It actually functions fine for a 3x magnifier. Indeed, it has a rather massive and heavy design that looks practically bulletproof. Picture the bottom of a heavy drinking tumbler, inverted. I made some quick measurements:It's about 3 inches or 77 mm in diameter. (This could be the reason for the model number). It's about 2 3/8 inches high or 60 mm.Optical quality is acceptable but the magnification is quite anemic given it's bulk and weight. For a 3x unit, it should be half this size. I gave this magnifier 5 stars for durability and sturdiness (aren't they redundant Amazon?), but not a good value. For $8 they might at least bother to give you the claimed magnification. One thing is sure, I'll never touch another Carson product. Just throwing my money away. I'll conclude by saying that if you only need slight magnification in a sturdy magnifier, then fine. But, don't expect anything like an honest 7 mag or decent eye-relief. 3a really good, economical loupeI keep a couple and use one in the field to inspect rock samples and one on my desk to inspect coins. The magnification is excellent and undistorted around the edges (as usually happened with really cheap lenses, glass or acrylic). It has a good 1 field of view at 10x through a 1 lens and this would be more than enough for most applications. As with any self-standing loupe, there has to be available light from the side to illuminate the object or you're not going to see much at all. It's a great loupe for coin and stamp collectors, and even to examine rock surfaces. 5Solid product! If this were twice the price, I wouldn't give it five stars. Maybe 4. But for the price charged, it's s very good value and quality!I noticed in the reviews that a couple of people said they used it in the field to identify insects, and that was what sold me. For the past 8-9 months my yard has been going through a plague, and how these critters are managing to get indoors is something I just haven't figured out. I have found what I think might be biting midges just everywhere! And they like to chow on me, which is getting old. I've managed to kill them pretty regularly with DE applications, but they are just too small. Even with my glasses on, I haven't been able to confirm what they are.I finally wised up and got this product, and now I can see them so much better. I still don't know what they are, but I'm one step closer. Note that it works best on a flat surface under a bright light. My desk lamp is perfect. In a different spot with crappy lighting, I can't see them well at all. 5Excellent viewer, sturdy and inexpensiveWe inherited a ton of slides, and wanted to sort out the ones we could use. I found that I could use this magnifier with an iPad as a backlight by using a flashlight app. I can lay out six slides and go over them pretty quickly. The magnifier is plastic, but very sturdy. The optics are great; I can see the pixels of the iPad through the slides. For the price, I don't think I'll find a better option anywhere. 5Big view, works wellIt is okay for the price. You place it on a flat surface and then the flat surface is in focus. You must place your eye right up close to it to get the full view, and then your head blocks ambient light, so you may need a flashlight or good ambient lighting to help illuminate whatever you are looking at. The focus is not adjustable and I have to keep my glasses on to use it (myopia), but then, it's always in focus too. The big lenses do give a wider view than most loupes do. ...Optics details: there is two identical acrylic (un-coated) double-convex lenses in it, 30mm diameter and about 2.5mm thick at the edges, both with a focal length of about 55mm and a plastic ring separating them by about 13mm. it may benefit from better lenses--glass w/antireflective coating, or (even better) coated achromats if you can find ones that will fit. The top unscrews a quarter-turn to allow removing the lenses, but they rest in the clear bottom piece so unscrewing it part-way does not alter the focus distance. ...My main issue with plastic lenses is that they tend to scuff from cleaning. Glass lenses don't have that issue. 5If you can find one at a good price, BUY ITIf you can find one at a good price, BUY IT! This little loupe no joke gives you 10x power. You can see the Whisker cracks and obvious imperfections quite clearly. It doesn't have a light that comes with it, but as my uncle always says the more complex they make something the more common it will break. So just flick on the lamp or use the suns power. It's even green energy friendly too. I love this little loupe. I wish it was smaller so i could pocket it, but besides that I LOVE IT!! 5Perfect for reviewing 2"x2" 35mm slidesI've got a very large library of slides that I'm not starting to convert to digital. To make sure that I'm only digitizing images worth converting, I needed to find a loupe that would do the job right. What does a loupe need to do? Firstly, for 35mm slides, it needs to be able to show you the entire image without having to move the loupe from side to side, or up and down. No problem, this loupe shows you everything. Secondly, you want a loupe that's going to let you know when your image is not sharp. While this loupe will not perform like others costing many times what this cost, it is sharp enough to help you discern the difference between a slide worth copying and one that does not. So, on that basis, this loupe delivers results and saves you money. 5Carson 10X MagnifierI have purchased two of the Carson magnifiers. A 4.5x and a 10x. The 4.5x has been great. It is large and magnifies well with good readability for small print (primary use). The 10x however is nearly useless to me and a handful of folks in the office with me. When it arrived, I was shocked to find that the 10x model is only about 1.25" across the magnifier lens (where the 4.5x model is probably 2.5-3" wide). None of us seem to be able to get this thing to focus to legibly interpret small print or drawings. I tried flipping the lens around (inverting the convex) within the housing to see if it made a difference. It didn't. The few times we did get a little bit of focus, the image was upside down. Pretty frustrating. I'd recommend the 4.5x version any day but have to say I would stay away from the 10x version. My 1 star rating is specific to the 10x version. 1Great product.I ordered this item for my 4 and 6 year olds. My kids spend lots of time outdoors and often times catch bugs or insects and like to inspect them. I got them this so that they could get a better look at the bodies of those tiny ants an whatever else they catch. So, far my kids have gotten lots of use from this magnifier. 5Perfect accessory for coin collectingOur 7yo son uses the magnifier along with his coin collection, to get a closeup of each coin.Pros:* Rugged construction stands up to use by kids (and adults)* Magnifies as expected* Perfect accessory for coin collectingCons:* No built-in lighting, so I have to shine a light at the object to be magnified (from the side) in order to get a good look* Field of view is a bit limited. If the coin is not exactly in the middle, you might miss it. 4
