Customer Reviews

Stop hesitating and buy it!Fantastic board game, and a good croasover for taboetop wargamers looking to get into more traditional board games and board gamers who want to see if they like tabletop wargames alike. The components are top rate- LOTS of really well sculpted (albeit stylized) miniatures. I have purchased nearly all of the expansions and optional buys for the game and look forward to CMON releasing more. This will also cross over with their upcoming Massive Darkness dungeon crawl game (with a $8- $10 separate crossover pack). Gameplay is fun and not complex. I wasnt sure how fun a game like this (being co-op) wpuld be, but after playing over a dozen times its still very fun every time, whether with 2 players or 4 (I have not yet tried a aolo game). Im very happy with this and will try other games by CMON after my experience with this. 5this is SUCH a fun game! 1 person up to 6 people can ...this is SUCH a fun game! 1 person up to 6 people can have hours of fun with this! every time you play its a whole new adventure!our family has game night every night now b/c of how much fun we have with this game!the rules are fair and easy to follow, the rule books does a great job of answering all the questions that come up, the miniatures are sturdy and made with amazing detail, the cards and cardstock are good quality, very happy with this purchase! 5Zombies keep coming and so do your friends so that they can keep playingIf you like zombies andwant to test your strategic survival skills in hand to hand combat in a medieval fantasy setting then buy this game. Invite your friends over and have a great time. The mechanics and balance of this game are great. The different player powers keep the game exciting and different. The components are made for the long haul and will last a good amount of time. I painted my miniatures and the details are great for painting. If you ever wear out the base game there are multiple expansions to add on and give you even more replayability and difficulty. Must have for zombie gamers. 5Best board game of all time!Zombicide is, by far, my favorite board game of all time. It is a cooperative game, but you still have the option of screwing your friends over to save yourself if you really want. It not only allows, but urges you to slay hordes of zombies by the dozens. Plus, I like Black Plague way more than other Zombicides because it I like the fantasy setting of using bows, swords, and spells. There is also a good variety of spells that let you play in other ways beyond just trying to kill your way through.Another bonus of Zombicide is that it has infinite replayability. There are several campaigns, but you can easily create your own, and there are a lot of expansions and additional characters you can get. 5Base game is bland, needs expansions for good variety. So, the base game is ok. It has a fun theme and the mini's are killer! But, and it is a big but! The base game can quickly grow stale with 3 main enemy types (not including the necros and abomination), and the rather bland item pool. It sounds like some of the expansions can spice this up a bit, but it's going to end up costing around 100-120$ to get there. For the right crowd it's probably worth it. I'm not sure I'm part of that crowd. 3Zombie slaughter brought low by overbearing luck factor1-6 players, Cooperative, Dungeon CrawlerOverview of Gameplay-In Zombicide you will be working with a team of fellow dungeon crawlers exploring large tiled areas. You will be searching for different items or attempting to take down one especially big nasty depending on which quest you partake in. All the while horde upon hordes of zombies will be spilling onto the game map to try and devour you.Win Condition /Length-Each of the missions the game comes with has a different win mechanic but it usually boils down to: find a specific colored token, kill a certain enemy, find certain cards from searching etc. They do stagger the events though to make it more interesting. For example one of the missions has tasked you with finding 2 water, 2 apples and 2 meat and then moving to the vault space on the board. Sounds simple enough but you also have to unlock the door to the vault, and to do that you must find the blue key! Now when setting up the board you take 4 double sided red X tokens and 1 that has a blue X on one side and red on the other. Mix em up facedown and then place them on the tiles the setup tells you. SO you run around with your party collecting these things trying to find the blue one but also have to search while in rooms to find that elusive food. It s pretty interesting and all the while you are having to fend off zombies as well. That s just one example, It can get pretty intense. The length is SUPER variable depending on which mission you are doing amongst other things. For example that mission I just described, it s 1 out of 5 chance to find that blue token right off the bat. You may get it on your first search or your last, it s all about that luck. And then finding that food is even worse, you draw from a pretty thick stack of equipment cards so who knows where all those cards are at in that deck. Some of the other missions are not as quite as luck dependent but you can expect this game to take around and hour and a half to 2 hours as an estimate.Setup/Takedown Setup is a bearrrrrrrrr. There are so many pieces to arrange depending on your mission and you have the huge double sided board tiles to setup in a very specific way. Luckily the guide does a decent job of explaining everything you need for each scenario and that is a huge help.Takedown is actually worse if you can believe it. This game comes awash with a torrential downpour of minis and they are organized in very specific spots in their plastic holder. Taking them out as you play is no issue but once you are finally finished with your game you come to realize you have a bookoo of minis scattered about the table that you need to find the specific places for. It s not overly difficult to figure out which mini fits in which hole as they have different sculpts, it s just very time consuming.Components/Game board Super impressed with the components as a whole. The minis are freaking fantastic, highly detailed and sturdy. There are a number of different sculpts for the zombies and the heroes and they all look great. The board tiles are also very well done and honestly these surprised me. Perhaps it s their size as they are much bigger than most board game tiles I have come across but these do not bow or warp at all. Each one of them lays perfectly flat on the table. The cards are also of a good quality and that mini size that you see every so often with certain games. The tokens are all pretty standard cardboard, nothing mind blowing there. Oh and there are cool plastic player boards as well! These are probably the coolest part of the game in my eyes as they are made to hold your particular player card and the small cards for your weapons in specific spots on the player board. It also keeps track of your health and powers AND experience gain by the use of tiny colored pegs of your player color. The game board itself is made up of large cardboard tiles that sit next to each other to form a map of sorts of the corridors and rooms you will be exploring. It s a cool way to make the game more variable and just screams for players to create their own custom layouts.Box/Storage The box is pretty meh. It s thicker than some but half of the box itself is taken up by another large box that holds the minis and plastic player boards. On top of that you place the board tiles and there are a couple plastic spacers that you fit in next to the tiles to keep them from moving around in the box which is nice. Then you can sit the instruction manual on top of that and then your good! ..Oh wait. We forgot to put all the tons and tons of tokens in the box. Ugh. How was this missed when boxing the game up? As best as I can see you have to squish in as many tokens as you can under the plastic insert that holds the minis before putting them in their box because holy moly this box is tightly packed. Luckily because it is so tightly packed you shouldn t have any issues storing it on its side on your shelf.Visual Appeal /Theme They really do a good job of bringing out the zombie theme here. This particular version of Zombicide is based around the medieval days so you will see a lot of old weaponry such as crossbows, swords, magic spells, necromancers, dwarves and other medieval fantasy stuff. And yes a Dwarf IS a weapon. The missions that are included with the game are all super thematic as well to tie into an overarching storyline that gets progressively more challenging from one to the next. The mission I was describing earlier where you collect the food was titled, Famine and there is a bit of story written on the setup page for that mission to describe what is going on. Each mission has something like this and it really draws you into the game.Rulebook The rule book looks nice but man it is THICK. There are a lot of things going on in this game and some of them are very confusing. Unfortunately the rulebook pretty much misses the mark in clearly explaining these things. The sound aspects and zombie movement come to mind as being especially complex. Also finding specific details in the book are very difficult as well. It does a good job of laying out the order of play and the mission layout is good but overall I wasn t impressed with it. Took me forever to get through it and learn exactly how to play and even then I had to return to it multiple times to clarify things.Table Talk/Fun Factor There is crazy amounts of table talk in this game. Actually as far as table talk is concerned this is one of the higher ranked games I have played. Since it is fully Co-op you will be strategizing and discussing all kinds of things with the other players such as what zombies to focus on and an overall strategy of how to go about the mission in general. You will want to work together as much as possible if you hope to stay alive long enough to see your mission fulfilled. As such this does create a ton of fun interacting with other players and the downtime per turn is very low, even at a full 6 players. Each player gets three actions and they move super-fast and if you are talking with your teammates then you should kind of already know what you are working towards. Even if you are not communicating the actions boil down to moving, searching and attacking for the most part. There is a TON of luck involved with this game. If luck is not your thing then you will probably not like this one at all. To attack you have dice rolls, to defend you have dice rolls. When you search you draw from a shuffled item deck and when the zombie phase happens you draw from a zombie spawn deck. Almost everything is this game revolves around luck to some degree. When you set the game up initially you randomize tokens with the one you need to find mixed in. Now I have no problem with luck in my games but honestly this one takes it too far. Because of the wildly swingy luck factor game length can vary greatly. Also the tension and difficulty will vary an insane amount as well. I ve had some games (more than one) where we found the token we needed on the first flip Heck all we had to do at that point was make movements to a spot on the board and we would have won. That s like a 15 minute game. So we usually reset the board if that happens but therein lies the problem. You never really know just how difficult or long your game will run and if that tension isn t there, the fun dies some as well.Optimal Player Count/Replayability The more the merrier with this game. You can play up to 6 players on most missions and indeed some missions actually force you to have a certain number of characters as well based on the setup. I m not a fan of playing more than one character at a time and that s what they instruct you to do in those situations that you don t have enough players for a particular mission. Playing a 2-player game is ok but I wouldn t recommend it and I certainly wouldn t recommend a solo game of this. This game thrives on player interaction and you just don t get that alone. The replayability is pretty high. The game comes with quite a few missions right out of the box to try out and I can for sure see people coming up with their own tile layouts and missions. That said, this game is mindless fun. It s the very pinnacle of a popcorn game. It s like sitting down watching a great action movie with tons of explosions and fight scenes. You are meant to plow through hordes and hordes of zombies and level your character up gaining new skills while trying to complete whatever objective is before you.Of course this is also one of those games that burns extremely bright the first couple of playthroughs and then dims pretty quickly. Even though there are a variety of missions to complete, it s the same show every time. You can only kill so many zombies before it starts to bore you, as such this is a game that you have to be in the mood to play but I suppose the same can be said with anything.Final Thoughts Zombicide Black Plague is an interesting game chock full of zombie slaying and teamwork. It isn t an incredibly deep game however there are enough rules to keep you scratching your head for some time. It has a ton of neat ideas but it boils down to just mindlessly killing zombies via dice rolls and the overbearing luck factor is just too much. Overall I like it but it needs much more crafting to be great and if I m in the mood I will play it.Final, Final Thoughts There are a number of expansions out for this game as of this writing and I have picked up a couple to try and stir some new life into the game. If you have played Black Plague and enjoy it then I would recommend picking up at least one expansion just to add more variety of enemies and items to draw. However even after adding 2 expansions worth of new enemies the game isn t improved. It still has that same feeling as the base game with a slight alteration on how you kill the new enemies or how they behave. 3Definitely GreatPros:- great minis and pieces (if you like painting you'll love this)- awesome replay ability- can be played solo and be enjoyable- relatively quick moving game as long as you don;t have that 1 guy who takes 3 years to make a move- Doesn't get boring, from start to finish it's an experience- lots of expansions- a tutorial mode that really helps with learning- really cheap for all that you get- with tutorial and 10 missions, even without expansions, thats 11-30 hours of awesome gameplay. Even if you never replay, thats great value.- game is fluid and can be quickly picked up especially if you have someone teaching it thats played beforeCons:- not the greatest box to pack it all away in (could have used some inserted slots for tokens)- can be challenging to learn if no one played. We hate learning games and still figured it out in like 40 mins while playing.- some rules could be clearer in the book (online searches helped clear things up)So worth it. I am so excited about this game and look forward to the expansions which I've heard are amazing. 5Good enough to get me to sell a couple othersSo I was staring at this game sitting in my wish list for months. I knew I was interested, I had heard it was a good game, but I didn't know if I wanted to spend that much (I'm cheap). It went on sale and I couldn't be any more glad that I finally pulled the trigger. The design quality of this game is fantastic. The miniatures are so good that I'm tempted to try painting them (god help us all). They even give you a diagram so you don't forget how to put the miniatures back! ....Let me repeat that....they give you a diagram. The game itself is a lot of fun, and much easier to learn and play then you may first believe. The rule book is pretty thick, but don't be scared. You know why the rule book it thick? It's because they break it up with large text, helpful notes, and fun illustrations. I learned how to play in about a half-hour, and was teaching other people the next day. The rules make sense, the turns move pretty cleanly, the game gets progressively more challenging the further in you get, and is very easy if you wanted to build your own adventures. It's worth adding to your collection. 5A Great Game that Delivers Something DifferentThe fact that this isn t a post-apocalyptic modern times, Walking Dead rip off like every other zombie thing ever is what caught my attention. And I m loving it.If you enjoy the theme and Fantasy Flight style PvE miniature board games this is right up your alley. The rules are relatively simple and straight forward, the minis themselves are well made, and the gameplay is a good mix of fun/fast-paced and challenging and is neither too easy or too hard.My only complaints are as follows:1. Like with FFG there are some rule specifics that aren t 100% clear and you ll have to hit the internet for clarification.2. The base game comes with one necromancer and one abomination yet features cards that want you to bring in more. This isn t a big deal as the rules can be changed to account for this but still...the fact that additional necromancers and abominations are hard to find (for reasonable prices) isn t fun either.3. If you end up liking this game and are the type who wants to collect everything associated with it that will be challenging without spending hundreds of dollars. I guess this was a kickstarter thing a few years ago and since then most of the content aside from the core box and expansion boxes either never went retail or did and haven t been reprinted yet (if they ever will be). Special Guest hero boxes, additional enemy boxes, etc are out there but can range from being normal, fair retail price to being double, triple, or even quadruple their original cost. 4Zombicide Black Plague is a great board gameZombicide Black Plague is a great board game, with simple rules that can be learned in half an hour, fast moving play, tension-filled in-game situations, tactical and strategic challenges, and a true cooperative play experience. For those with experience with the original Zombicide, note that Black Plague is a different experience in that your characters are less victims trying to survive a zombie apocalypse than skilled and equipped heroes who are fighting back against the zombie horde. Everyone starts out with a viable weapon, and the equipment just gets better from there after a few searches. There is plenty of zombie hack and slash in this game. In the course of a single quest, high dozens to hundreds of zombies will be slaughtered as these heroes valiantly strive to push back the undead tide. And yet that might not enough for most of the scenarios. The character's abilities will have to be used to the utmost in combination with a well-thought out plan of attack for the particular challenge of each quest if the characters are to overcome both the unrelenting horde and fickle fate (i.e. die rolls and card draws). The game materials are of very good quality. The game board tiles beautifully evoke a medieval setting, and there are multiple varieties of miniatures for each zombie type. Set up and tear down is not too bad, averaging 10-15 minutes each for one to two people, and probably less with more help. All in all this game provides a fun, challenging, and immersive experience for those who enjoy fantasy/medieval themes, the zombie apocalypse genre, or both. If there's a downside, it is that there's no character progression from scenario to scenario. The characters go through the full power progression each and every quest, just like regular Zombicide. Oh well, there's always Massive Darkness to look forward to. 5
