Customer Reviews

Binding already failing on arrival! Was going to get this for friend and fellow fan of the show. I'd already read that the cover wasn't textured, so it was disappointing, but not really surprising. What did surprise me was how flimsy the binding is. Both the front and back were coming loose as soon as I opened it. I figured it might be fun for a fan and writer to have despite the somewhat silly cover, but I'm not giving something in this condition as a gift... 1The first time I was initially disappointed because it's not an exact replica- it's like a ...This is the second time I've ordered this journal. The first time I was initially disappointed because it's not an exact replica- it's like a screen print. But I rolled with it anyway and grew to love it. That one was stolen a few days ago so I ordered a new one and it came in with a broken spine. I'm returning it but I'm super disappointed about it. 2Son loves it!My son saw this and saved his money and was asking for extra chores for days to purchase this.It arrived yesterday and he spent at least an hour writing in it- so needless to say I've hardly seen the book! But apparently it was exactly what he thought it would be and he's really loving it.If you or your kids are Dr. Who fans this would be a fun addition to your collection. :) 5Not embossed like River's journal, but still a fine notebookThis is a licensed product (Doctor Who / BBC logos on the back), not an imitation or knockoff. It's a conventional notebook/journal, with 160 pages (320, counting both sides of each page). The cover is a cardboard hardback with a printed overlay that replicates the look (but not the feel) of River Song's journal. The endpapers are plain white; the journal sheets are around 22-pound bond paper, bright white with dark gray ruled lines (23 lines per page, 5/32" or 8 mm separation). The dimensions of the cover are 8" 5" 7/8" (20.3 cm 12.7 cm 0.22 cm). The dimensions of the journal pages are 7-3/4" 4-3/4" (19.7 cm 12.1 cm); subtract about 1/2" (1.3 cm) from the width that's too close to the binding to use usable. The binding is not exceptionally sturdy (the top half of first journal page in my copy is detached from the binding), but seems typical of a journal of this type and price. It will not lie flat. The price for this item is comparable to a moleskin journal of the same dimensions, but a moleskin will lie flat and usually have better quality binding and paper. With this item you're paying for the novelty of having a replica of River Song's journal. My 12-year-old daughter bought this with her own money, and is delighted with it. 4not as good as it seemsWhen buying this I thought it would be textured, and really look like River Song's journal - it doesn't! It's a plain book with an image printed on the front. Especially for the price I expected something much better looking. Very very disappointed. 2Brilliant!Looks very similar to Riversong s journal...smooth surface though. I like the hard cover. Lined pages inside. My daughter was so happy with this and writes in it everyday! She needs a new one very soon and sadly this is no longer available. 5I can understand the mixed reviewsI bought this in addition to two on Esty via CuriousCuriousities. I can definitely see the difference. Esty's runs about $35 and it has most of the things people complain about with this BBC licensed product: a textured (though not leather) cover that looks like River Song's actual journal on the book. There are two versions, a brand-new looking one with only some distress. And the other one is distressed as the journal looks as the show goes along! These two Etsy versions do not have lined pages and have a bookmark. This BBC licensed product definitely doesn't compare aesthetically. The cover is a photo with texture and the blue is too light and too green to make it look distressed. It's much smaller. It has a great amount of pages. And the pages are unlined. I'm keeping all of them because I go through journals very quickly. Even if the BBC one is a cheap facsimile. 3Not was I was expectingI should have read the reviews a bit more closely--it's a printed hardcover, not a textured cloth cover like in the show. Also, the item I received had a hole in the cover and the first few pages, as though someone had shoved a pushpin through the item at one point. It's perfectly adequate for writing stuff down, but it's not the cool piece of Dr Who paraphernalia that I was expecting; it's more a cheap knockoff. 2Good Enough, Not Prop QualityIt is licensed BBC Doctor Who merchandise so you can't get mad or call it a rip off, because it really is exactly as it is described in the listing. No it is not embossed or leather bound as River Song's is in the show... But no the listing never claimed it was. Very clearly says it is hardcover and cardboard. The size seems a bit off from the prop too... In "Product Details" it says 4x4x1 and thats not true, but in the description is says "Measuring 8inches tall x 5inches wide..." Not quite... its a fraction of an inch smaller in both directions, not enough to notice, but still not the same shape/size ratio as the TV prop. This isn't the seller's fault of course, this is because the BBC doesn't make good merchandise.Overall I am happy with it since it was less than $10.00, and you get what you pay for. 4I should have read the reviews! For over $30 I was expecting the nice leather River Song Tardis replica journal. THATS what I wanted. Of course, that's not what I got The cover looks like something my 9-year-old might have done for geometry. And inside are just plain lined pages. No witty lines from the shows, or even any illustrations grace its pages! I guess I will give it to my son instead of trying to return it to China. Next time, I will read the reviews first. 1
