Cute toy kit, does not actually function as a microscope to any degree of usefulnessCute toy kit, does not actually function as a microscope to any degree of usefulness. If you are wanting a play toy for a child to pretend microscope this will work. Howerver, if you want to actually see things close up clear enough to discern more than just a undulating blob than better move on. 1MicroscopeGrandson loved it. He opened and immediately started using it to discover the world of science. He's 7. Happy grNdparents 5In my opinion, these cheap microscopes should simply not be sold. When I was stuck down in Des Moines I found some interesting plant specimens and ordered this microscope as I had weeks of sitting around in a hotel room to kill. I knew this scope was bad, and it was, terribly so. To be honest, I now believe that unless one needs a glorified magnifying glass, one should pay no less than $100. This product is useless for even the most basic viewing on low magnification. The ability to focus this microscope is key, yet the pinon knob refuses to hold the microscope above the stage. After applying grease to remove the sticky grease that was applied at the factory, things only got worse, and no matter of tightening or loosening would fix the problem. The chromatic abberation was terrible, rainbows, rainbows everywhere. The supplied light just wasn't enough at high magnification, I had to resort to using a desk lamp and the mirror supplied with the microscope. Now, I said the microscope was garbage, let me talk about the accessories. The very idea of a scalpel in a children's toy makes me cringe, same for the needle. This is not safe, nor is it responsible. I would also like to say that I don't appreciate having the scalpel blade crack apart and send razor shards across the room. The included vials are inaccurate and serve only as a "wow factor" for suckers and schmucks, they serve no use. most of my cover slips were shattered, and my blank slides were all contaminated with some sort of dust.I can say one positive thing about this microscope, the insect card is good. I love those things, I use them in school. The durability of the card, the cheap yet interesting construction, the quality of the mounting for such a cheap product makes these a blast to use with decent microscopes. 1Gift...but looks like a winner...sturdy case and lots of parts, my 11 yr old cant wait! Hes located it 3 times and I had to move it out till Christmas! 5My little Science nerdMy child loved this and it really works well. Put it with a lab coat and get ready for some science experiments. 5One StarWorst thing I have ever bought.. Did not even give it to my Grandaughter.. Very disappointed 1Five StarsMy son loves this! 5Four StarsMy Grandson loved it! 4Save your moneyLike most of the other reviews, cheaply made. My grandson was so excited to get it, but then it didn't work. We'll just make a trip to Toys R Us. This was my fault though, I didn't read the reviews first. Good lesson. 1Absolute piece of junkDon't get this for your kid(s). It is virtually worthless. Made from thin plastic with painted chrome surfaces and cheap plastic lenses. One of the lenses inside the microscope is dirty and every thing my child looks at under it is overlayed with a yellow film that is grossly spotted. I will have to unscrew the main compartment of the microscope to clean the only lens left that I haven't cleaned in hopes of making this microscope of any possible use. Think a higher zoom power version will be any better...don't count on it! I agree with another reviewer, this microscope should not even be sold; a complete waste of money. 1
