Do not recommendI was looking for metallic pencils to do lovely steampunk designs. I've heard marvelous things about faber castell so I decided to give it a try. At first the colors seem very vibrant, but very quickly they start to look dull. For example my solar flare red went from a shining red to a dull metallic brown color. The color pigment comes off too easily, leaving streaks of vibrant color on you, and duller colors on paper. The other big issue is the break way to easily. After working with one pencil on day one, it looked like I had been using it for months. The whole pencil was almost gone because it broke 7 times on me. 7 times is ridiculous. I will definitely be looking for another brand. 1Huff and puff at the dust and random pieces of lead that litter your pageI have the Faber-Castell polychromos pencils and love them. However, this version of their pencils, the metallic, leave a lot to be desired. The color goes down richly, I'll admit that, but pieces of lead break off and I have to blow the dust off. The whole lead does not come out of the pencil and they sharpen okay, but when coloring it's hit or miss how they apply. I ordered these with a set of Tombow Iritojen fluorescent pencils and those are fine so I don't believe it's because this got damaged in shipping or they'd both be like that. I think it's just this particular product from Faber-Castell that is of poor quality. 2No Metallic Red or Metallic Pink Pencils Resulted in the Four Star Rating ...Faber-Castell products have always been favorites of mine. Now that my grandson joins me in creating art projects, I am purchasing more and more of their colored pencils and markers. Because we enjoy drawing and coloring varied themes of pictures, Faber-Castell 12 Count Metallic Colored EcoPencils were just what we needed to help round out our art box.You will find Faber-Castell Metallic Colored EcoPencils are another wonderful addition for your child s or your own art supplies. Their hexagon-shape makes them easier than round pencils to hold. The leads are not brittle and do not break off easily. Used on dark papers, the metallic colors pop . Used over similar colored, but non-metallic pencils, Faber-Castell Metallic Colored EcoPencils add dimension and highlighting.The twelve pencils are no longer labeled with space-themed names, nor are the actual colors identified. Included in the box of Faber-Castell Metallic Colored EcoPencils I received are silver, pewter, gold, and copper pencils; pencils in metallic versions of the colors lavender, lilac, purple, turquoise, blue, celery, green, and one odd color that I cannot specifically identify. There are no metallic versions of red or of pink pencils included a definite negative. It is for this reason that I am rating the product as only a 4-star item. Had the set included metallic versions of red and pink pencils, it would have received five stars. 4Not great, but OK value for the priceI purchased the Faber-Castell Red Line Metallic Pencils because I wanted some mineral and metal shades for adult coloring books:1. Coloring gears and metal knickknacks in Daria Song's The Time Chamber (gorgeous and charming, buy it! or the similar The Time Garden -- both available on Amazon);2. Adding dimension to stellar objects in the NASA Earth & Space coloring book (buy it! it's beautiful, unique and gender neutral -- available on Amazon or Blick); and3. Creating a dew-like look to flora in books like Fantastic Planet (unique and fun) or Hokusai: Birds, Flowers and Nature (perfect if you love gradients) -- (both available on Amazon or Blick).I find they're kinda "meh" for these purposes.COMPARISON: I have 3 different brands of metallic pencils: Derwent, Spectrum Noir and Faber-Castell (in order of preference.) The Faber-Castell metallic pencils are my least favorite. I find they are the least pigmented and the least shimmery. The Faber-Castell metallics are also the hardest of the 3 brands, which makes them less useful for blending and more useful for tiny spaces. For the least expensive of the 3, you kinda get what you pay for.COLORS: There is very little difference between the 2 pinks, 2 blues, or 2 greens offered. **NOTE:** The Faber-Castell metallic pencils are NOT labeled by color and there are NO color names on the box even, which I found infuriating. I had to first go online to find out the names of the colors and then mark them with a label maker to tell them apart.Here are the color names:(The names are not that helpful in identifying the different pencils; I did my best.)SilverAsteroid Gray (dark grey)GoldCopper (orange)Solar Flare Red (red)Comet Red (magenta)Starlight (light pink)Purple Cosmos (dark purple)Blue Stratosphere (darker blue)Moonbeam Blue (lighter blue)Martian Green (darker green)Stardust Teal (lighter green)PACKAGING: The Faber-Castell metallic pencils come in a paper box. There is NO perforation that would have allowed you to fold it into an easel. Both the Derwernt and the Spectrum Noir metallic pencils come in metal tins with plastic trays.SHINE: These are metallic TONED, not super glittery-shiny. Like all metallic pencils, they're metall-*ic* not metal; don't expect high-gloss. Personally, I find that the obvious shiny metallics have very limited use anyway. If I want something to actually look like shiny metal I'll achieve that with shading and blending. Instead, I use the shiny metallics (like Prismacolor Verithin or Premier Soft Core Metallic Gold) when I want a gold foil or stamped look to a design. However, it's worth noting that you can also layer the Faber-Castell metallics on top of the Prismacolor metallics to add more shine to the Faber-Castells if needed, while still keeping the main Faber-Castell metallic hue. 3crumblyway soft and crumbly - not for serious colorists despite the name brand that is usually reliable for quality. I purchased a different brand "Bright Ideas" of metallic colors on amazon some months ago, and although soft, they do not crumble. Hence I suggest that brand over the Faber-Castell. The Bright Ideas pencils also come in a durable pencil box. 1Great pencils but not many metal colors!I have three other Faber-Castell sets of colored pencils and I love them alot. I was disappointed that of 12 metallic colors there are more colors that are purple, pinks, blues & greens than metal colors. The gold doesn't look gold on paper. There is one that is probably copper and one that is probably brass, but that's it!!! How about mercury, iron, lead, cobalt, platinum, zinc, tin etc?I know a lot of products come in metallic colors (hence the purples, pinks and blues, but having the name of the color on the pencil would be help a lot. That is a common problem with Faber-castell colored pencils. Of all four F-C colored pencil sets, only one has the color names imprinted on the pencil.Of course the metallic pencils work well but don't have names on them and have very few metal colors. I like Faber-castell colored pencils a lot, but I probably will not buy replacements when the time comes, because not having the color on the pencil is a deal breaker for me. I do a lot of coloring book coloring and I often need to finish another day, and having the color on it would help me find the correct pencil. As it is I often find myself grabbing a pencil that is close in color, but not the same and it causes problems.The name on the pencil is info that should be given to people who are purchasing online. It would be an important piece of info for me. 4I like these... but, there are betterI already own Spectrum Noir's metallic pencils and I bought these because I wanted some different shades.The difference between the two pencils is significant. SN's pencils are very creamy, not quite like an oil pastel, but also not like a regular pencil. These are like a regular pencil, the scratchy kind of feel.I like the colors and I am happy I bought them. I can still use them along with SN's pencils for some good blending and the shades are a tad different, giving me 24 different colors now.If you already have nice pencils, this could be a good addition. If you are debating between these and Spectrum Noir, spend a little more and get the Spectrum Noir pencils. They are creamier and much nicer to use. 3Eco-friendly metallic colored pencilsI'm a great fan of Faber-Castell stationery products and have been using them for four decades, since I was a little girl. My eight-year-old daughter is using them now and enjoys the high performance of these stellar instruments for writing and coloring.These Faber-Castell metallic colored pencils have 12 shades of metallic colors that are labelled with interesting space-themed names:Asteroid GraySilverStardust TealCopperGoldStarlightPurple CosmosComet RedSolar Flare RedBlue StratosphereMoonbeam BlueMartian GreenThey are nice and bright and enhance drawings, and pictures. The pencils have a smooth feel to the lead for most of the colors and go on paper very nicely. The colors pop up especially on dark paper. This is a quality product and also eco-friendly since the pencils are made of reforested wood. 5Rose Art and Crayola do a better job. A second disadvantage to these pencils is ...I was excited that Faber-Castell metallic pencils had 12 colors. Unfortunately the 3 purples, two greens, and two blues are difficult to tell apart if they are used on light papers. (I was hoping to be able to add metallic outlines to regular colors.) If you use these pencils on dark paper, they are more impressive and similar colors can be distinguished. If you want metallic pencils that will work on white paper, Rose Art and Crayola do a better job. A second disadvantage to these pencils is that neither a name or number appears on the pencil. It you are working with a large number of colors in a complex design and trying different color combinations, it becomes difficult to find the colors you were working with. If these are for kids, this is not a problem. If you are using the adult coloring books that are popular right now, keep this in mind. The pencils DO lay down opaque color nicely. 3 Glad I ignored the negative reviews. Personally, I LOVE them. Some of them are really soft and they crumble so you have to blow away the leftovers. They do not smear or rub off on your hands while coloring. I will post a pic of a sample test I did using my mail. I used prisma verithin in black on one side so you can see the diff with the metallic placed on a white vs black background(more like colored pencil background). Black construction paper would def make the metallic pop. It is still noticeable on white paper but more so in person. You will not see the true effects via photos BUT I tried my best to angle it against natural sun light and you can kind of see it. One thing that I dislike is there are no names on each colored pencil, just a number AND nothing on the box to distinguish colors either?!I colored a flower pic out of one of my coloring books using nothing but the metallics just for review purposes so please ignore the flaws as I didn't take my time at all. I angled it in many ways so the indoor lighting can capture the effect. Using the flash kills the metallic sheen. These are not good for coloring large areas IMO, better for subtle effects coloring small areas, jewelry, or for use on flowers to create Certain effects. I will also attach 2 more pics I colored using FC classics but I did use diff green metallics on the leaves and the blue metallic for the background color.Update:check out my Caran D'ache review on their metallics. I posted a 9th pic here comparing these in the sunlight. FC on top and Caran D'ache on bottom. I took off a star because the Caran D'a has more of a true metallic effect than these. 4
