Customer Reviews

Unbelievably Complicated Set Up and Learning - Wasted My Money and Time!Intricate with a bazillion little easy-to-lose pieces for any age, this Cold War game looked like a winner, but just ended in mutually assured destruction. My sister was reading the instructions out loud for literally 45 minutes while we tried to set up the game. Never got to play it. We gave up. It wasn't any fun to read. I couldn't figure out the object of the game, or how to play. They just kept explaining how to set it up. I was punching out dozens of little cardboard markers and trying to keep them neat. The play board took up our entire table, as well. Hard-to-reach across and no room for Fritos and fizzy drinks. My goal was to buy a fun and worthwhile game to play at this special time with my sister. Total failure. Just miserable that I wasted my money and time. (Please note, I lived through the last days of the Cold War and am a fan of spy thrillers and a student of all things 80s, so...I have a natural affinity for the theme.) 1Excellent Cold War Strategy GameI played this game at the most recent Strategicon in Los Angeles and it was quite an experience. 6.5 hour game! It is a 2 player game where one player is the US and the other Russia. It does a great job at replicating the tension of the Cold War the final score after that time was within +1 point and each side had areas of tension throughout. Neither of us were experienced in playing. I definitely recommend that you play with someone at your relative skill level. IT takes a bit of patience to learn the game and watching a You Tube on the game or playing with someone that understands it is critical as the rule book is rather long. But overall an excellent game. Great history lesson and intense strategy required. Highly recommended for the serious strategy gamer. Not a war game per se but definitely a political strategy game! 5For all of you strategists out there...If you enjoy games with a lot of strategic thinking and high stakes decision making, this game is for you. Also, if you enjoy games that have historical themes, enjoy. If you are someone who likes fantastical art/ themes and having a bit of freedom to choose your own path, move along. The outcome of this game is very dependent on your choices and the cards you receive. It is intense and a brain burner, but loved by a lot of people- it just depends on what you're into. Good for 2 players. I'm not into the art/ theme and I like having more freedom/ creativity which is why I give it 4 stars, but I can appreciate the mechanics/ gameplay. 4I love this gameI love this game!!!!! I first heard about it from an ex a while back who thought it would be a great game for us to play. And let me tell you I'm glad he told me about this game, as someone who has a unique interest with Russia I was so thrilled to see the layering and the focus that this game requires. All though it is a bit difficult to get a grasp on the rule book does include an example game which I recommend going thru, but once you get into the game it's a blast. With the multiples goals and layers to this game you are never at a loss of things to do and keep track of and that's what keeps this game so interesting and makes the hours just fly by. I would recommend making a day of it, especially on your first attempt but it's a blast to play one on one or as teams. 5All Time Classic!Twilight Struggle is one of the all time classic board games of the past generation! It's card selection/action mechanic is/was a true revolution in board game design. It has influenced dozens of other games from the famous COIN series of war games to The Expanse (i.e. Twilight Struggle lite) and countless others. The game's only flaw is that experienced players will always DESTROY new players. It's the nature of the beast. But for those who tough it out, Twilight Struggle is a deeply rewarding game. 52 Player game that was #1 on BGGI wondered what the hype around this game was. It's a 2 player game that was #1 on BoardGameGeek (as of this writing Gloomhaven is the current #1). This game has a LOT of strategy to it, although you can pick up and start playing with only a moderate learning curve. An experienced player who can plan for what is coming next will have a HUGE advantage. If you don't handicap (either by points or starting influence) a highly experienced player will almost always win. The first few games will likely go quickly with one player winning early. This is a cold war game where USA and USSR do proxy battles for influence around the world. The events fit and this game has a wonderful thematic feel. Younger players born after the end of the cold war might not appreciate it fully. 5Do you like stress? Well you found the right game!Twilight Struggle is like running a marathon, every step is work but when you finish, hot dog do you feel like you achieved something. The game takes anywhere from 3-4 hours to complete (for my group). We typically explain to others that it feels like every single move you do is the most important decision you're making, which leads to a level of prolonged stress that can only be intentionally experienced every so often. Which leads to why I wouldn't rate it 5 stars; it simply is not a game I can imagine playing all the time. You really have to be in the mood for it.Great theming, great mechanics, great strategy. But with how much less often we'd be pulling this game off the shelf to play compared to the other top rated Board Game Geek games, its value decreases. Isolated to just the gameplay itself then Yes, it deserves the highest ratings. Holistically though in terms of value compared to other strategy games and how often you'll play other games compared to this, it does drop in my opinion. 4A Fantastic Game to Duel with a FriendBought this game about two months ago and have gotten to play it a few times now. As someone who usually just plays with one other person it makes such a difference to have one that is made to be played that way. It is a long duel (usually it stays set up overnight) but it is addicting. One note: if you haven't played before both players NEED to spend the time reading the rules manual or watching an online tutorial. It took over an hour for me to get through it the first time. 5This is a great game full of nuance and replayability. There are many decisions to be made in this game, yet it is not overwhelming. It helps to have someone explain the gameplay but there are a lot of videos on Boardgame Geek to help with that. This is a great upgrade to 1960: The Making of the President which is also a great game by the same designers. There is a very good reason why this game holds the #1 spot on Boardgame Geek for overall game, strategy game, and war game. There is a lot of history in the decisions to be made while replaying the critical elements of the cold war. I highly suggest getting the Deluxe edition of this game because it tries to balance out some complaints that gamers had with the first edition of the game. However, either version will work fine for most players. This is a must-have for your collection so long as you can commit to playing a 2-3 hour game with a friend. As much as people like to play games like Risk, this game has a definitive ending so it isn't 2-3 hours of pushing pieces around a board. 5There's a reason it's #1 on BoardGameGeek.comThis is a really fantastic game. It's a card driven strategy game that does a wonderful job of balancing both sides (it's a two player only game) and makes every decision feel loaded with pros and cons. You never feel like you're in complete control of the game and you're always a step or two away from catastrophe. The game is also a perfect melding of theme to game play: the Cold War history ties in perfectly to the game play in that events from the past cause the situation on the board to change. The balance of trying to demonstrate military might without sparking a nuclear war creates game play limits that enable creative strategy.Any fan of board games deserves to give this one a chance, it is amazing. 5
