    The latch on this set will damage your furniture and is a deal breakerThe board is a decent size and the pieces are solid wood and are ok. Not a bad starter set in that regard.However, there is a very serious design flaw with this set that you will need to address or you will ruin your furniture: the latch that keeps the chess set locked when it is closed has sharp edges and a protrusion which will scratch your tabletop and otherwise keep the board from laying flat. The first thing you should do when you get this set is grab a small Phillips screwdriver and remove that latch. After that, you will probably want to store it in its original box when not in use.The thought of returning the set did occur to me but there are negative reviews about so many of the other chess sets in this price range that I will just keep it and see if I can improve upon it. The board is a nice size and has a decent contrast between the dark and light squares. The board also opens up nicely with the seam between the two halves of the board becoming quite unnoticeable while playing. The pieces are good enough to start with, but I may shop for nicer pieces. The inserts inside the board that hold the pieces inside are nothing special and I may one day remove them (they are not attached in any way) to see if I can install some kind of magnetic latch on the inside of the set with crazy glue.If I had known about the latch issue before I bought this set I would not have bought it. Now that I own it, I don't feel like bothering to return it and will instead work with it as a starter set.They could turn this into a four or five star product by improving the latch situation. My preference would be something magnetic, 3Like old times...About the chess set itself, it seems to be made in the same fashion as the one on which my father taught me how to play. The smell of the set is pretty reminiscent of my childhood battleground, the look and feel of the cloth-lined interior is the same and the pieces are carved in that same 'hand-carved' look that the original set seemed to boast. However, the wood composing both the board and the pieces feels cheaper than the original. It's as obvious as the difference between oak and sandalwood. My only other complaint about the set itself is that the fabric lining the inside of the case doesn't seem to adhere very well to the wood. I noticed that it pulled up a little when the elastic band was lifted enough to get the piece in place.On to my other note: The shipping was lightening fast; as I received the set within two days of the receipt without paying for expedited shipping.In short, the product is awesome and will do nicely enough in my endeavors to play against friends. I recommend chess to everyone who has or wants skills with analytic thinking. 5Decent Set for the PriceThis is a decent set for the price. In fact, my wife taught me how to play chess with this set. However, after about 20 games, I recognized I wanted something larger and more substantial and subsequently ordered a much more expensive "high-end" set. However, this set is plenty good enough to serve as both a beginner set and because it folds, it also great to take with you wherever you go. The pieces have felt underneath to make them slide smoothly without damaging the board. However, because the pieces are very light, they tip over easily. In summary, it is a decent set for the cost. 4Storage Picture Inaccurate!Inside of board has 16 places to secure pieces, however each row of 8 uses the same cheap elastic band. More importantly, unlike the misleading photo, there is no depression within which to set each piece. Not only is the removal and replacement of each piece inconvenient compared to a fitted slot (as the photo shows), it is very cheaply constructed and you will over time just end up throwing all the pieces inside the board to rattle around. 1Well, you can play chess on it...I am fairly disappointed with this product. I spent a few days browsing through different chess boards around this price range on amazon, and based on product reviews I decided that this one was the best value for the money. After receiving the chess board and looking it over, it seems to be poorly constructed. The squares are made of very thin pieces of wood (almost paper thin) that are glued onto the surface of the board. Most of these these thin pieces of wood are smooth, but some of them are rough and look like they have never seen a sander. The actual board surface is only 1/8" thick, and feels as if I could push my thumb through it if I tried. With that being said, I wouldn't recommend this board for children because I don't think it would hold up very well. There is a gouge on the left side of the board which doesn't affect the functionality in any way, but seeing flaws in a brand new product is discouraging. The board is made in China.Additionally, the board is advertised as measuring 16" x 16". Well, I'm pretty handy with a ruler and mine measures 14 3/8" X 14 7/8".When folded, the dimensions are 14 3/4" x 7 3/4" x 2".The squares on the board are roughly 1 5/8". I say "roughly" because not all of my squares measure the same size.If you have woodworking skills and time, you can make a much nicer board for about the same price. If I knew how poor of a value this board was going to be, I would have just made my own. Instead, I decided to take the lazy man's way out. Learn from my mistake.With all the negatives aside, if you are a beginner just starting out playing chess, this board may be acceptable for you. It is portable, which is handy, and it's still cheaper than many other boards on the market. However, if you plan on playing chess on one board for years to come, this board probably isn't going to cut it. 2greatfirst one sent with a missing rook. we used a hose clamp for a rook, and that is probably why i lost that game to my son. The board on the first one and on the replacement was great, straight, stable, solid, nice looking. the pieces are not artworks, but just like what i played on when i was kid. exactly the set i was looking for. seems well put together.worked with amazon about return -- couldnt figure out process -- i thought i could just get the rook, but i did a return, new game arrived on time, and return shipping label printed from my account. all i do is package and drop off to ups. Good phone service from amazon 5Well-made with some felts missingI bought this to play with my visitors sometimes when they come over. You know, sit around, playing chess, have some tea, and chat, instead of playing some chess games on the computer. I don't use it very much. Maybe, twice a month. Thus far, I really like it. The board surface is very smooth, and well-made overall. The pieces are glossy and feels nice to touch.My only complain is that a Knight and a Pawn of mine are missing felts on the bottom!! I can live with that, so I didn't bother to get a replacement from amazon.com, but it's something you should be aware of. Check for the felt on the pieces first thing when you received it. 4Very nice set for the price!Just received this set yesterday. Did read the pay reviews, but did not experience any of the issues that might have occurred in the past; the inlay is smooth, the edges are shaped well, no problem at all with the latch lining up. I'm going to reuse the zip lock bags that the pieces were shipped in and store them inside like that instead of using the elastic loops ( which appear to be connected well in the event I ever plan to use them). The set actually arrived one day after I had ordered it (yeah amazon prime!). Expect to have years of use with this set and will never have to worry about spending too much for it. The board is 14 3/4 inches square which is large enough without being too large. I wouldn't call this a small board in my opinion. The pieces definitely are wood, perhaps a bit lighter than some othere sets out there, but are nicely sized and shaped. Very pleased with this purchase and do recommend it for someone who wants a new set : ideal as a starter, casual, or travel set. 4Very Happy With This Chess Game!!!Bought this for my 9 year old son who has expressed a keen interest in Chess. It is nicely made and durable, not flimsy at all. The pieces can be placed in individual elastic straps which is a great addition to the game so they don't accidentally fall out when opening the board. I like this very much as is isn't one of those cheap boards and it's not over the top expensive either. It would make a great gift for people of all ages. Kudos to this company for making a middle of the road Chess game that when all set up looks more expensive then it is. Came on time and intact! Very pleased!!! 5good qualityThis is a solid chess set. The wooden pieces are well made and so is the board. We've been playing a lot of chess at our house and I see this being used for years to come. 5
