    Does not lock, very light pieces.This is a good family/ starter set. I would not recommend traveling with it. The board is made out of a very light pine that folds in 1/2 for storage. This is NOT a stackable 3 part board as the image implies, but a single board. Checkers on one side backgammon on the inside.I only give this 3 stars for the following reasons.The storage is a little dicey. You flip the board to the backgammon side and place pieces on one side and fold over. Sure that's the easy part. But there is no locking mechanism for the board to stay closed, thus it is easy to spill the contents.The pieces, in particular the chess, are VERY light weight. So much so that any little touch will move it a fair distance. I like to have a little heft to my pieces, so this very dry light pine almost feels like balsa wood.The image also shows a darker wood, almost an oak color. It is not.. it is very very light pine, with a basic smooth finish. 3I really like itI got what some of the other reviewers did: the playing surface is a little "thin" and you need to be careful not to gouge it if you're actually going to use this as a portable set (travel style). That said I really liked the set and now keep it in my truck. I've added 5 regular dice + Yahtzee score cards, and a standard deck of cards, and it's basically an all-in-one travel game kit!Two things would make it better:1. The closure magnets work. Better at least for me than some reviewers suggested, so maybe they improved this? But still not good enough. A simple latch of some kind would be a simpler and stronger idea. I added a velcro wrap to hold it closed and that works for me.2. Some of the pieces (especially backgammon) are very slippery. At this price point felt-backing is probably too much to ask. But I'd pay a dollar or two more if they came that way. It would be a nice touch.Compared to most of the cheap-o plastic or "fake wood" options out there, I think this is a really nice set. I may get another just to keep in my car... 4DisappointingWe bought this after considerable research and were very disappointed when it arrived. The game board folds in half to make a carrying case and to hold all the various game parts on the inside. But we noticed that the board was warped so that when it was closed in "carry" mode, that there was a clear gap on one side and the unit barely closed correctly. Additionally, the top of this set (the squares for chess and checkers) is not real wood which was possibly the most disappointing discovery. It's contact paper that has images of squares that simulate wood. We thought we were buying and all-wood set, but it is not. We plan on returning this due to the poor quality of the product. 2MehIt's ok, but nothing special. My issues with the item are:1. Checkers pieces are not what pictured in photo - I got flimsy quarter-thin lacquered pieces of probably plastic2. The top of the board is very slippery laminate3. Combined with plastic checker pieces, it's a combination for pieces sliding every each way unless the board is level. Dropping anything on the board or nudging it will cause all the playing pieces to slide off, guaranteed.4. The board doesn't have A-H/1-8, it would be nice to have. 3Great product.Over all I am very pleased. I did open it up to check everything out but we have not officially used it yet as it is a birthday present for my 7 year old son.The chess pieces have a nice feeling your hand and the felt is done well. The board lays nice and flat and is smooth. There might be one or two discrepancies but overall it's a beautiful board. The backgammon board inside is also well done. I bought this one because I particularly liked the handle it had and I didn't really see a lot of others I liked that had multiple games and folded up.I was worried about the magnets holding it closed with all the pieces inside but they seem to do a fine job (as shown in the photo). I'm sure that over time they will wear out and eventually might even have to be replaced but for now they seem to do the job very well.The one downside that I have is that it didn't come with instructions! Perhaps it is assumed that if you're going to spend this much money you know how to play. My son has recently started learning chess but we don't know anything about backgammon. It would be nice to have basic instructions for all the games you can play. It seems kind of silly to spend money on this and not get the instructions but that's, so far, the only negative review I have. 4Excellent Addition to the Family Game ClosetThis is a great little backgammon and checkers set. We purchased the smallest size, and it is pretty small...I think it might be a little snug for backgammon, but we hadn't tried it yet. My daughters have been obsessed with playing checkers, and it's a nice board for that too. The pieces are nice smooth wood on one side and a grooved side (for when my kiddos shout "King Me"). It's a nice quality piece for the price. Definitely not the heirloom quality of backgammon board my parents had and I simply didn't appreciate at the time. 4Sturdy, nice-looking set. Possible quality control issue.This isn't too small or big, and it doesn't feel cheap. The pieces glide nicely. However, my first set was missing a white pawn. Thankfully, Amazon return is great, so I was able to replace it with a complete set, though I wish I could've received only the one white pawn. (I asked the company, but the company handled only the shipping part. Oh well, I don't like that part of the streamlined modern way of commerce, sigh.) Then, the new set came with an extra black pawn. But I wasn't about to return it over that.After seeing two sets, there was an update with the second set. The first set had checker pieces that were straight flat discs. The second set had checker pieces that had grooves and a slight raised section to make the kinged stack stay more stable. Despite preferring the flat, simple look, the raised section was a nice addition. I don't know which one you will receive.Despite the quality-control issue, I'm giving it a 5-star review because it's a handsome set, and any QC issues would be handled swiftly if you encountered any. 5It's a Very Nice Set, and a Great Deal.It's a very nice set. I bought it strictly for the chess part of it, though I would like to learn how to play the other games that came with it. The board (chess and checker part) gets scratched easily, however, you should expect that out of wood. So leave it in a safe spot to protect the wood (And don't slide, or slam the pieces on the board. It will probably get scratched!) It unfortunately did not come with directions or any sort of manual, which was disappointing, and pretty bad on the company's part. The chess pieces are nicely sized. They are also very shiny, and the colors of the chess pieces are beautiful. They all have pieces of dark green felt on the bottoms of each piece, which is secured with glue, and I liked that a lot. Another thing is that the felt doesn't make the pieces fall over, or sit on a slant. So it's a perfect amount of felt, and it's perfectly placed. The checker/backgammon pieces, dice, and cup are also very nice quality. I recommend this product, and it arrived fairly quickly. (right before Christmas, so that was really great.) I ordered this, and a book from the same seller, and it still came quickly. The items (as I also ordered a book, which I mentioned previously) were protected with air-filled pouches (that's what they looked like to me) that protected my packages. Everything came in exceptional condition as well. Thank you. 4I shop a lot on Amazon, as a result ...I shop a lot on Amazon, as a result of that I don t leave your views often,Are usually wait at least 4 months. And leave the review after using the product In my everyday life for months I can leave an honest review.I left 1 star because it broke after using it 1 time.It was left at the same place, and 2nd time I opened it, the thing just fell apart in my hands.I don t want a refund or a new one. Just an honest review for all if you shoppers out there. ( I had to glue it together ) 1This thing is great!The worst thing I can say about this is that the game-play instructions are *terrible*, but if you're buying off Amazon you can google game play instructions with great results.Otherwise this is perfect, exactly what I was looking for! The case is fairly solidly held together with the magnets when closed, all the pieces (chess, backgammon, dice and cups) seem to be well made and solid, the chessboard on the outside has taken a ton of "abuse" from my 13 year old carelessly carrying it around and bonking it into walls or onto tables and the floors - not a scratch visible. I have the feeling this will last at the VERY least until he's in college! 5
