Customer Reviews

Pretty cool, but more difficult to assemble than LegosMy ten-year-old son is an avid Star Wars Lego collector and has recently become a Star Trek fan as well. My parents purchased this set for him for Christmas. He put it together in about two hours but had "numb thumbs" as he said, because he had to put so much pressure on some of the pieces to get them to hold together. Another point: the bags of pieces are not labeled in numerical order as they are in Lego sets. For an experienced assembler like my son, this was no big deal, but it might be more difficult for a younger child or novice to figure out the directions. On the plus side, there were fewer pieces to put together than there would be in a Lego set of similar size. The top removes easily to reveal the cockpit and minifigs inside. The engines do light up as in the picture on the box, and the photon torpedo actually shoot a little blue missile. The minifigs themselves are unique, with limbs that rotate in their sockets--more adjustable than Lego minifigs. The finished product really looks like the star ship Enterprise, and from front to back measures a good 19." Another pro--the price. I'm not complaining, but Legos can be quite expensive. However, this set was an affordable $40, well worth the end result despite the difficulties my son had in getting the pieces perfectly lined up and assembled. Most important--he was very happy! 4Good enough to be good funI've always been a lego snob. Now, with my kids of prime lego playing age, I'm even more of a lego snob (nothing worse than a 5 year old crying over a pile of broken bricks). Having said that, this product holds up perfectly fine for model building and light play. At the risk of wild inaccuracy, I'd say it feels about 10% less "snappy" than legos, but the hold seems slightly better than that (ie, not as good as lego, but better than I initially thought given the soft snap). Also, the plans call for a fair amount of redundancy, so by the end, the model seemed fairly sturdy. Some of the reviews sound horrific, and maybe there's a lot of variability, but ours has performed just fine with no need for glue or even much parental involvement. As a side rant, I would say that the complexity, specificity and fragility of lego-branded models is such that, when my kids and I complete a sizeable model, it goes right up on the shelf, anyway. When we take out Jabba's Palace or any of the jedi ships, it's white gloves only. This gets used the same way: pretty to look at, and occasionally played with during quiet times, hidden away when rowdy 5 or 7 year old friends come over! Finally, and this is a side rant to a side rant, it's nice to have Star Trek as an alternative to the lego Star Wars universe. You can get The Enterprise + the Klingon Bird of Prey + 2 or 3 small sets and that's enough to have a playable "universe". It's a pretty easy & inexpensive, and now the kids can take Sulu, Spock, Kirk, Uhura, etc. and build their own adventures using my (good-old-fashioned brick) legos. The tendency in my family with Star Wars legos is to always beg for another set (and to stop building from scratch), so I think this helps in a small way to get back to old fashioned open-ended play. 4Pretty cool (Once completed) & Puchased another on 1/5/14This was my second kre-o building experience. And BOY, it was VERY daunting. First the review.Good points- It's BIG. Front to back it's 19 inches (or about 48 cm) /Side to side 9 inches (22 cm) / top to bottom 5 1/2 inches (13.5 cm)- Good representation of the Enterprise (as in basic design shape).- Very Sturdy (Once built)- Light-up feature. Push once,Turns on (12-14 seconds). Twice, brighter @ 12-14 seconds. Three, flickers@ 8 seconds- Bridge is roomy enough for customizing (pics included will show added pieces).- Exclusive Mr. Spock kre-o figure.- Exclusive Dr. McCoy kre-o figure.- Exclusive Capt. Kirk Kre-o figure.- Two "specialist" figures.- Warp Engine interior section.Bad points- This is Kre-o. You have to MAKE SURE each piece squeezes together with no filler space in-between, or there's problems.- Pieces won't stick to the Underneath of the Saucer section AT ALL.- Sometimes it a struggle to get lid on and off of the Saucer. (I lay it on loose).- Once you connect Saucer/Bottom section together it's Sturdy. BUT... It takes patiences, and was SO frustrating at times.- It takes a lot of time to complete this. Be prepared to do and undo many mistakes. I'm a novice - 8 hours total for me.People have had problems with putting the top cover for the bridge together because of warping. I have not had that problem. Putting this together did cause me some headaches along the way, but in the end, I have a sturdy, well put together kre-o starship that that I really love to display, and it just looks so cool. I would cautiously recommend this, but with younger ones, they will definitely need help with this project.I give this a solid Three Stars, and a cautionary Four Stars. As for the educational value, it's value, is seeing your hard work and effort rewarded at the end of the finished project.Phew! Ok, I'm done.Update: 1/9/14I received my 2nd Enterprise yesterday in the mail and thought I'd try again. There were so many negative comments that I wanted to see if there were any problems (and it was totally cheap. I bought the "used/damaged box" one for less than $16.00 and started again.).Same thing. The only problem I had was a few times, I had to really press to get some pieces to "squish" into place. Everything BUT the underside of the bridge section was ok. Nothing would stick to that. Otherwise, take your time, and it should work. I'd buy another, but I have no room for anymore builds. They are at a steal right now. Well, if it goes below 13.00 I'm getting two more regardless.I hope this encourages people to not just throw it away. I just started Legos/Kre-os mid-November and am still a newbie to this hobby. I hope you try again . They are cool when built. 5KRE-O isnt Lego, but not that badSo as everyone knows, only Lego is Lego. Mega blocks, Kre-o, and everyone else cant compare to Lego quality. That being said, if you take away your judgement how inferior it is to Lego its actually not that bad. We've just been spoiled by Lego.So now on to the product review. I found the instructions acceptable. Not up to the standards set by, guess who, Lego, however they are more than enough to get you though the building process.PLEASE NOTE THIS: If you use glue to hold the pieces together, do not glue the RED BLOCKS. They move around from time to time in the instructions. They start off as a support thing for the command deck, then later are removed and used as support in another area where they stay. Read the instructions ahead alittle so you know where to glue.Another little gripe I have is that you cant put the top of the command deck on with the crew sitting in their chairs. All that being said I did enjoy building this kit. And I love Star Trek in general. If you haven't seen the movies do it. 4No Lego!I ordered this set because it was the only Star Trek "Lego" set I could find. While I knew it wasn't Lego brand, I didn't think it would be so far removed from the quality. The pieces do not fit very well and you can tell by looking at the pieces that they were made very cheaply. The plastic was not sufficiently cooled before being removed from the mold so you can see the melted plastic trailings off the pieces. And the instructions?! I don't know who wrote them but they must have been drunk. It has you do a certain step and then as if by magic, the step you just did disappears off from the next step and you have to go over again and figure out where this and that went. The lid to the bridge deck is not on a hinge and you cannot easily open it up to see it and it does not fit on the ship properly. The "minifigs" do not easily seat in their chairs and even those are cheaply made. You have to put their whole bodies together, piece by piece and even their hair is a separate piece! WTF?! One cool thing I liked about the set was that it had lights that came on, something I have not seen Lego do.Overall, I WOULD NOT recommend this to any collector that likes either Star Trek or Lego. You will be disappointed in both.Lego, if you are listening....pleeeeeeeeeeease produce some Star Trek sets so we don't have to have these substandard Lego wannabe's! I will never buy any sets from KRE-O again. Sorely disappointed! :( 2Great Kit at a GREAT price! After nearly 40 years on the Lego wagon, I decided recently to fall off. Lego's competitors have been upping their game of late--in design, plastic quality, and licensing. I've been a Star Trek fan almost as long as I've been a Lego fan, so when I saw this kit there was little question that I would build it!This kit--this very one--is the reason I no longer buy exclusively Lego.In terms of plastic quality, I find them to be a B+/A- as compared to Lego's A+. As far as design goes, I find them to be at about the A level, to Lego's A+. And, of course, it's a kit from a franchise I love!I've read other posts that complained about the fit of the bricks or structural integrity of the model, but I found absolutely no issue with either of these things. The bricks fit together perfectly and I've found the model to be very sturdy (even with the inherently unstable design of the Enterprise). But, the price...oh, ladies and gentlemen....the price! I paid around $35 for this kit--brand new. Slap a Lego sticker on this bad-boy and it would sell for $120 at Toys-We-Be!!Like Legos? Like Star Trek or spaceships? Get this kit! 5Kre-O NCC-1701 Worth The Wait!As a life-long Star Trek fan and "modular toy brick" hobbyist, I've waited my entire life for a realistic kit of the USS Enterprise. Considering my 40-year desire for this product, I had high expectations. Upon starting the build, I was surprised to see the secondary hull (bottom part) was a large single unit that included the engine nacelle pylons pre-attached (these rotate into position - do not try to remove them) and a battery compartment for 3 AAAs. I put in the batteries (this step can be done last if you choose) and completed the rest of the build. The instructions are clear and easy and it took about 2 hours. Pleasant surprises include:1) It lights up! The main deflector dish and Bussard collectors (front of the engines) light up bright blue when a button on the bottom is pressed.2) The "NCC-1701" letters on the primary hull (saucer section) are pre-printed on making for a better appearance.3) The engine nacelle tops open to reveal inner details.4) The attachment between the primary and secondary hulls is very clever making for a secure connection that won't fall apart.5) A Photon Torpedo can be fired from the interconnecting dorsal (just above the main deflector dish).Overall the final product is sturdy and measures 19 inches long. Several figures are included and can be placed in the bridge playset, which is located within the primary hull. In summary, this product has loads of value, features, and utility that will keep children and adults excited for a long time to come. As the parts are fully compatible with "other major toy brick brands" I imagine we'll see many variations in private collections as people re-create the myriad other Starfleet ship designs shown in the various films, shows and written publications. 5Horrible ExecutionSanta brought this for our 9 year-old son, who loves Legos and Star Trek. The characters are nicely done and the idea of the Enterprise is nice, but the actual execution of the engineering is pathetic. The toy is useless to us now, other than as spare parts for other things my children will build, but we certainly cannot build the Enterprise. The first problem that will become apparent to the builder is that the teeth of the blocks are shallow when compared to Legos, causing the blocks set on these blocks to have poor grip.Another problem is the blocks that make up the disk of the Enterprise. Not only do they suffer from shallow teeth, but there are many of them that sit on only two or three teeth, with the rest of the block sitting on bare plastic. As a result, any flex of the Enterprise's disk caused these pieces to come apart. Also on the disk was the most frustrating piece of the design: The plates connecting the disk to the body of the ship. These plates simply did not maintain connection to the underside of the disk. When you pushed on the plates in an attempt to get them to connect, the disk would flex just a bit, causing the disk to fall apart. Pushing the disk back together would then cause the plates to come loose (though they would come loose on their own after only a minute or so).We attempted to glue these poorly designed pieces together, only to have the pieces not fit properly and, while we were trying to fit them properly, have the glue freeze them in that position. We ended up throwing most of the disk away. It was complete junk and was unusable.Do not waste your money on this toy. It is horribly designed and is not even close to the build quality of Lego. Just spend the money on the real thing. 1My husband and I really enjoyed putting this togetherMy husband and I really enjoyed putting this together. It is true that sometimes the pieces go together really...mushy....and don't always stay together. I had a few instances where it was difficult to keep pieces together during the building process. I also wish there were more of a building process. I was looking forward to putting more pieces together. Also, Kirk won't stay together. His hair won't stay on so he stays hidden away in the bridge. Overall we love the piece for what it is. It stays in my office at work and it's always a good story to tell. I love that Kreo makes Star Trek stuff and I'll definitely buy more of it. Maybe just with some superglue next time. I paid in full for this item. All opinions and views expressed are my own (and sometimes partially my husbands). I was not gifted this product nor did I receive it at a discount. 4Fun but frustrating: easy to build, doesn't stay togetherThis was a gift for my 11-year-old LEGO freak who was thrilled to find a Star Trek-related building set. I purchased it knowing that most LEGO-clone toys we'd had didn't quite live up to the LEGO quality standard. This held true for this set.My son is a very experienced LEGO builder and regularly builds sets that are far above the rating for his age range, but he is also easily frustrated when things don't work as advertised, so this review is written from that perspective.PROS:He had no trouble putting this set together by himself in less than an hour.He found the instructions fairly clear and easy to follow, and he appreciated the fact that the colors in the manual were well differentiated. (He and I sometimes have trouble with LEGO instructions--the black pieces can be hard to distinguish from the dark-gray pieces in the instructions.) While the bags of pieces didn't seem to be organized in any coherent fashion, he's used to this and has a strategy for sorting pieces by type before he begins. (Highly recommended for any set with more than a few hundred pieces.)He likes Star Trek but isn't an avid fan, so the authenticity and level of detail of the Enterprise were fine for him--other fans may or may not be satisfied. He's enjoyed playing with the nicely detailed mini-figures included.Certainly less expensive than a comparable LEGO set, but not an inexpensive toy.CONS:As other reviewers have mentioned, some of the key pieces don't stay together. He found that the flat pieces at the top of the "cabin" part absolutely, positively refused to stay snapped together. The base also frequently comes apart from the "cabin." (Note: he did remove the "spacer" pieces during construction, as noted in another review above, but it didn't affect the problem.) He spent about two hours trying to fix the problem and getting very frustrated. Like others, we resorted to gluing the flat pieces together. This isn't the end of the world, as those pieces are specialized and wouldn't be very useful in building other things, but it does mean the more regular bricks they adhere to are now unavailable for any other project.THE BOTTOM LINE:A decent toy for people who:* are moderately experienced builders (or have help);* older kids who won't be frustrated by things popping off constantly;* people who don't mind gluing pieces together for a static model. 2
