fun while learningI bought these series of books for a friend whose four (4) year old child is about to start kindergarten in September 2017. At first We had a little issue getting the books to work with the pen but after another try we were successful in downloading the material.I can see from the reaction of the child that activities in some of the books are really excited and funny as she couldnt wait to turn the pages without showing sign of boredom. The audio on the tag is loud enough without being annoying. These books takes you right down to the fundamental stages of learning as emphasis is placed on pronunciations and sounding of the words. The only reason for my one star deduction is for the difficulty i experienced at first to down load the book but overall i thin its a good choice to buy the volumes. 4Only works with Tag, not Tag JuniorThis works with ONLY tag, not Tag Junior or Leap Reader Junior or Pal. Not sure which one I have as ALL THREE are a dog and look the same. Frankly, I find all of this quite confusing as they are all very similar with similar names. I got this off their website, "The Tag Reading System pen will work with LeapReader Junior/Tag Junior books, but the LeapReader Junior/Tag Junior is not compatible with Tag Reading System books." Say what? My kiddo is disappointed and I am very annoyed. Sending the books back and the dog is going to doggy heaven as soon as my kiddo tires of the lame books she already has. They need to seriously simplify their products. 1He loved using it but it was very hard to find ...My son received a LeapReader pen as a gift two Christmas' ago. He loved using it but it was very hard to find books to use with it in stores, so we are thrilled that were able to find several books on Amazon. My son will use the pen to read the words then he loves to play the games that are on each page and loves to find all the sounds attached to the different objects on the pages. He is not big into dinosaurs, but really enjoys this book, so I think if your children loves dinos then they will really love this book since it is a good blend of a fictional story with scientific facts. 5Enjoyable for 4 year old.My four-year-old grandson seems to enjoy the stories and is beginning to get the hang of using these a little bit on his own. My other grandchildren had a previous version of this system and it was very beneficial in boosting reading skills. I wish there could be a "happy medium" between these affordable books that aren't very durable and the more expensive hardcovers. That's really my only complaint is that these are already showing wear with just a few uses and I don't think they are going to hold up well for the long haul. 4Great for a self conscious beginning readerThis is a great set of books that is well thought out to help beginning readers. It has a great mix of easy sight words and some very slightly more complicated words. Just what my daughter needed. She is very self conscious about practicing her reading in front of people for fear of making mistakes no matter how much encouragement we have given so this gives her the ability to practice with a little extra help. 5Does not work with Tag ReaderDo not buy this if you only have a Tag Reader. Says on the packaging that it works with Tag, but there is no way for me to download the audio for the book to my Tag Reader. Read reviews on Leapfrog website before purchasing so you don't throw your money away like I did. 1Familiarize With Phonics!I am an elementary school teacher. Even though my family has officially banned anymore educational toys from my children's playroom (instead insisting on some "regular" toys), I just couldn't help myself. I love LeapFrog toys. I have had my eye on the Tag since my oldest son was 2 , but finally at 4 I feel he is ready for it.This set includes six books: Long A, Long I, Long O, Long U, Y as a vowel, and a Review book. They are different from regular Tag books in several ways. There are no licensed characters featured in the set (e.g. Dora, Diego, SpongeBob). They are also paperback books. The biggest difference though is the educational substance of this set. With regular Tag books, a child has the option to play games (book-wide or page-wide games), have the entire page read to them (like a Story Reader), to point to the individual word and have it read, or point to any graphic on the page and have it do something. While these books have all of that, this set is additionally designed for TEACHING phonics. Each book page has three modes the child can choose from: Say It (default), Sound It, and Spell It. I will describe each:' Say It - just like regular Tag books, you put the Tag pen on an individual word and it will say it.' Sound It - (or phonics mode) sounds out individual consonants, vowels, or special grouped combinations (like "ea", "ou", "kn", etc) which are too difficult to explain efficiently in this learning format. For example: while running the Tag pen across the name Lily, it would sound out, "Llllll - ih - lllll - eeeee, Lily." You will also hear things like, "this e is silent," and other phonics rules.' Spell It - self-explanatoryWhat makes this set so unique is the phonics mode. LeapFrog should incorporate it into all of their Tag books. The Long E sound is missing. Long Y could have been incorporated into the Long I book to exaggerate the point of their similarity ("spy" "sky" and "bike" "hike") to make way for a Long E book. Perhaps they left it out because E is not long "stand alone" and needs another vowel to combine with it to sound long ("feat", "bee", "sea", "ear"). Long E still has a functional sound and should be addressed for consistency's sake, especially given that the books include and acknowledge other vowel combos, and especially given that no vowel is long stand-alone without another vowel helper like the silent E (in June, huge, dune, rule, lone, cane) or within a vowel combo like (suit, fruit, bait, loan).Also, each book does not make a point to EMPHASIZE the vowel sound they are trying to teach other than simply including a lot of words with that sound in the story. In my opinion, it should be exagerrated textually and phonetically so the child can make the connection. Overall though, this is a helpful set, I like it better than regular Tag books, and it WILL help your child.---------------------------------------------------One problem I personally find with most educational toys is the age rating. Age 4-7 and 5-8 are huge ability gaps (yet these are how the Tag books are age-grouped) and I do not think all books are appropriate within the full range specified. I especially notice this in the Tag Junior books which say they are for 2-4 year olds (which I bought for my 3-year-old and some of the books are appropriate for my 15-month old!). While the Tag Reader and Tag Junior reader are appropriate for the ages specified, Tag books should be more precisely age-rated - perhaps 2-3, 3-4, 4-5, 5-6, 6-7, 7-8. Some Tag books are way over a 4- or 5-year-old's head and some of the books are not challenging enough for 7- to 8-year-olds. I bought some books for my 4 year old that he enjoys listening to but cannot fully utilize yet, which is disappointing.Unlike me, read up on the book content before buying and that should ensure you spend your hard-earned dollars on what your child will use NOW and not something that will be used in a year or two! Amazon, Wal-mart, and Toys-R-Us reviews are very helpful in this. HTH! 4Great product!I bought this set of LeapReader books to go along with the LeapReader pen I bought my toddler on a Black Friday special sale. Despite even THIS item being on "special" for Black Friday, the price on Amazon was considerably lower and I just couldn't pass it up. In fact, I bought all 3 volumes for my daughter. I love the Leap Frog products and find them to be high in quality... both content-wise and durability wise. As a teacher, this is very important to me. I'm thrilled to watch my daughter fall in love with reading as a result of reading these books! Thanks Leap Frog for making such great products and thanks Amazon for making them accessible to me! 5Could be better. Please upgrade the software!!!I did my research, and as expected, I see what other parents were complaining about. I wish I could turn off all the babble that goes on during this "reading session". It's disruptive and annoying. My son is turning 3 and this just confuses him. When he touches the D or OG he doesn't want to hear talking. Just read the damn letters and words! I wish this was a setting option. Some card combinations of course don't form a word, I would say that may be another downfall for kids who are learning.Example:you touch letter Z. The pen says "zzzzz"you touch letters AP. The pen says "touch an ending sound to make a word" (in other words, it did not register what you just touched)you have to touch AP AGAIN for the 2nd time for it to say "AP. ZAP."you touch letter Z and the pen says "Great sounds!" (again, is this a bug or what?)you touch letter Z again and it says "zzzz"I just want it to read what is on the card and not say anything else! 4It works with Tag!!!Amazing! Hands down amazing! Don't listen to any negative reviews. This product does what it is supposed to AND it works with Tag!! Whoever says it doesn't is smokin crack. Lol!! My disaster LOVES it and it was as easy as hooking our TAG to the computer and telling the leap frog program to download the flash card audio. Easy peazy!! 5
