It was fun, but the game design could be betterIt was fairly fun, but it could be designed better.At times the information provided to your wasn't enough to properly answer questions that other players asked. After each round you would learn a little more about your character, at the same time other players did.We got confused a couple times, and the killer was accidentally spoiled to us because that player accidentally showed us the last page of their book, where they were informed they were the killer.I feel like when I use this again, i'm going to have to make my own booklets with all the information on your character given up front. 3Excellent Party! (Tips in review!)This game was so fun! I can't wait to play the other ones in the series!I read the reviews and all of the advice and this is what worked for us:-Tell your guests waaay ahead of time. I gauged interest a little over a month.-Give your guests their character name/description (or the invitation!) at least a month in advanced so that they can prepare their costumes. I just scanned the character descriptions and sent my guests a PDF via email.-Set the scene! I had a lot of fun decorating. I put crime scene tape all over my hard and outlined a body in my porch. I also had a mug shot back drop to photograph all of my guests. I also enjoyed using my nice dishes and linens.-I didn't use any of the menu recommendations. The menu has nothing to do with the script so if you wanted to go way out into left field, go forth. I served Pioneer Woman's baked ziti, garlic bread, caesar salad, and Italian love cake. It was spectacular.-When your guests arrive, prepare them. Someone is going to find out that they're the murderer immediately. I think that's important because I cannot keep a secret and would instantly smile. My guests were nervous about the same. We all agreed that we would read the first page with our faces covered and then all give our best "I'm the murderer" face. It worked like a charm.-We did not use the CD. I started to, but it was really lame. It didn't change game play at all. And I really liked that they gave us the option.-It's really a lot of information (especially or the host, who needs to know and explain the rules), but once you get started, it's easy. The first round really warms you up.-For us, the most confusing part was after each scripted scenes, you have to make accusations and then respond. It gets a little hairy, especially if the murderer doesn't have a good answer. The murderer needs to be a good liar and prepared to make up a story on the fly. BUT! Everyone else is reading their responses to accusations and the murderer is just making it up, it's definitely suspicious. To counter that, you should make sure your guests don't read directly from their booklets. They should read the page thoroughly, reference it while speaking, but shouldn't read from it. This is especially important in round 3. We also didn't realize that guests should form their own questions, not just the ones listed in the booklet.-Some reviews stated that it was difficult for the characters to understand when to reveal clues. It was obvious to us as the accusation says, "REVEAL CLUE!" Perhaps those reviewers didn't know that all accusations should have been made each round. It's confusing because anyone can make an accusation, but some of them feel like they should be in order. Sometimes we would piggy back on one another. For example, someone would say, "Marco, you did it because [some reason or another]!" And before Marco could answer, another character would say, "That's a good point, and Marco, what about [this other reason that you're probably the murderer]?" and Marco would respond. And maybe he could evade answering all of accusations.-Some reviews said that two characters weren't really critical and you could play without them. I don't think that's true. In fact, when it was time to make a formal accusations, Clair and Father Alfredo each got a vote. They were definitely involved and definitely good suspects. I almost didn't invite a 7th and 8th guest and I'm glad I did. The party may have been ruined. My version is definitely made for 8 characters.-I had prizes for each of my guests. The murderer obviously wouldn't win, so they received a prize, and then any guest who guessed correctly. Only one person did! I gave out a gift card, K cups, and little bottles of liquor.Overall, it was so fun. My guests really enjoyed it. I thought it was put together well. Now that I've played one, I'll feel better prepared trying out the others. 5Fun!We played with 6 people. I would not recommend playing with 8 as there are only 6 suspects. We all wore some kind of costume or prop that suited our character, some more so than others. We tried to get into our parts with accents, again, some more so than others. You want to invite people who can get silly and have fun with something like this. We started off around the kitchen island with a cocktail, guac dip and baked brie, then headed to our seats at the dining room table to look at our "booklets" and start the first round. We got a little screwed up at first and didn't follow the proper order but it didn't really matter. There are very specific instructions in the booklets telling you when to "STOP" and also letting you know what you should and should NOT reveal about your character, so as long as people can follow basic instructions, they should be able to play the game. I gave everyone a few pieces of paper for note-taking. We all scribbled furiously at first but after awhile, that went out the window. The CD narrator gives a review at the beginning of each round stating what the group learned in the previous round ... that was a help. Before we started each of the rounds (3 total, then the reveal), we went into the kitchen to re-fill our drinks and get another round of appetizers or small plates. (Our menu was all appetizers and small plates ... made it more fun than a formal dinner IMO. And easier. ) After a few drinks, it was a little harder following the instructions and remembering some of the details, but that just made things more interesting and fun .... not an issue really at all. (The person in our group who was making the drinks was very generous with the vodka.) The booklets, cd and instructions are all pretty easy to follow and the story and characters were developed well enough to make things fun and interesting. But don't expect anything super sophisticated. There wasn't a lot of room for creativity and off-script questioning but that didn't impact the game negatively in any significant way. All in all, it was a fun adventure ... something different for sure and I would highly recommend it. 5Great Christmas Murder Myster for our friendsThis was our first Murder Mystery Dinner Party. The kit contains everything you need. I sent out a cover letter with the invitation explaining the evening. We followed the plan to the letter. The guest got into character came dressed for the part. We had Cornish Game Hens stuffed with stove top stuffing and served them over Long Grain wild rice. The garnish for the plate was Jellied Cranberry and a Vegetable mixture of broc, cauliflower, and carrots. Gave the guest 1 piece of each of the vegetables. We ordered the Game Hens from a local meat market and they were all equal in size. We provided take home boxes for those that could not finish the hens and stuffing. For appetizers we served 3 large shrimp with cocktail sauce. We marked the door to the dinning room as a Crime Scene and would not let anyone enter until we were ready. I acted as host, server. Before we entered the crime scene I set the stage for the evening. We placed the Character booklets and name tags at each place setting so no one had a chance to read it ahead of time. The party favors were small bottles of wine with an Underwood Estates label We also had bottled water with Underwood Estates labels. After the guest entered the Crime Scene we allowed them to read the rules of the game and to do the introductions. As they were doing the first scene I served the Shrimp. for the Dinner Rolls I made wine infused butter after the butter and wine were blended I spread them in large Christmas cookie cutters. I had one with red wine infused and white wine infused. We waited until after the shrimp to do the questions and answers. When that was done they did the 2nd scene and just before the question and answer we served the plated game hens. When they were done we did the questions and answers. After Scene 3 before the final questions we served the Poached Pears with Devonshire Cream. After we had cleared the table and had coffee served we let them guess who had committed the murder. We have a Keurig coffee maker so we had a basket with different coffees and let each of the guest select which they wanted. We started at 6t:30 with the dinner and was serving coffee at 9:30. The guess have stated that they have never had so much fun. I will add some photos of the table 5A Fun Friends Getaway ActivityThis was my first time ordering a murder mystery pack. I had done another murder mystery game with friends, but it was much different from this experience.. both of which were great in their own way. Although the game came with invitations to mail out, I created a Facebook event and assigned characters roles to friends. You don't have to do it this way, but it was definitely easier. Because I gave everyone ample notice of what their character was like, they had time to assemble or purchase costumes (and mentally prepare, of course ;) We hosted the gang up at a cabin, and this was the highlight of the weekend. It did take us the first round to get the gist of how the script, conversation session and CD all played out, but once we had one round under our belts, we were golden. The theme was totally corny but the game was really fun and everyone got into their characters, which made it even better. Although this is an 8 player game, there are only 6 main (or needed) characters. Two characters are just supporting in case you need 8 characters. My husband and I plan on hosting another game night with a different group of friends and plan on being the supporting characters since we know how the story goes. Overall, I think this was a fun purchase and would recommend it to anyone looking for a unique thing to do with friends. 4THIS REVIEW HAS NO SPOILERS: An easy way to throw a killer party. Get it? Killer...This review has NO SPOILERS whatsoever.As I read the reviews for this game, I kept coming across reviewers that stated that there are two "extra" characters that don't matter/play a lesser part in the story. This couldn't be further from the truth. All eight characters are essential to the story and aid in casting doubt and adding substantial clues to the story. They all get clues that they get to reveal, and they all get the same gear as everyone else. (Reading some of those reviews made me mad, because essentially I knew 2 characters were for sure not the murderer, and there were no spoiler warnings, so be careful reading the reviews here.)We just played the game this past weekend and you absolutely needed 8 people to play all of the 8 characters.Here are my suggestions (for first-timers with this specific murder-mystery set-up).Some of the recipes that they give you in the book are a little... eccentric? The baked ziti, which is supposed to be the main dish, had kind of a goofy recipe for the red sauce, if you think that you won't like it, you are probably right, just google a different recipe for baked ziti. Also, you don't even have to serve anything in the recipe book, because it isn't referenced (at all) during the game. (The only food they talk about isn't even a recipe in the book...) So make whatever you want. OR (what we will do next time) invite your guests to each bring their own version of each of the recipes in the book and have a pot-luck.I will say: The Mocha Rum Cake with Ricotta Cream was amazing. And I made it with gluten-free flour for a guest who had dietary restrictions and it still turned out amazing! It tasted like a cannoli cake. I am sure with wheat-flour it would taste even better.We invited 8 guests to play the 8 characters, and like I mentioned above, they each had an equal part to play. My husband and I, who were hosting the party, created our own characters that brought our group to 10 total. My husband and I made up our own characters because,1) if someone shouldn't come at the last minute, we could substitute in for them2) we wanted to be sure that we could help if any of our guests didn't understand the game mechanics and had a question they wanted answered without feeling like they were going to reveal too much information or harm their chances of winning3) we wanted to be able to serve and clear the dinner without missing any lines or clue reveals that would hinder the flow of the gameThe game has an audio CD that has four tracks that you play in between the three rounds where a person named "Antonio Telastori" narrates what is going on and fills in some of the blanks.So it goes like this:Play Track 1 on CD: Introduction to the story by TelastoriIntroduce CharactersBegin Round 1 DialogueBegin Round 1 QuestioningPlay Track 2 on CD: Continued Story by TelastoriBegin Round 2 DialogueBegin Round 2 QuestioningPlay Track 3 on CD: Continued Story by TelastoriBegin Round 3 DialogueBegin Round 3 QuestioningFinal Statements made by each characterAccusationsPlay Track 4 on CD: Telastori reveals who is the real murderer.So rather than play the CD, my husband decided to dress up as Antonio Telastori and typed up everything that Telastori says in the CD on tracks 1-3 and read it as Antonio Telastori from a wingback chair in front of the fireplace. He didn't want to know who the murderer was so he chose to wait to play the final track of the CD at our party rather than perform it for our guests.I made up a character named "Colleen DiCoppza" who was a new waitress/bus-girl who was (totally obviously) an undercover cop. I basically waited the table and then got to "arrest" the murderer at the end of the night.Our guests got to be the real stars of the show.Before the party, let your guests know which characters they are, and what the costume suggestions are. In lieu of the invitations, we just invited everyone on a Facebook event and private messaged everyone their character's name and their costume suggestion. I put a list of all of the characters and their background description on the wall of the group so that everyone could see. But that's all they really need to know before they get to the party.At the party we had each table setting include their CHARACTER BOOKLET (this contains all of the dialogue and questioning), their CLUES (some of the characters will have different clues that their character booklet prompts them to reveal during different parts of the game. Instruct your characters to keep the clues face down, until they are instructed to reveal them (or you could put them in sealed, labled envelopes - what we will do next time...), and their NAME TAGS. All of these items came with the game, we also included (at our own behest): NAME TENTS, SPIRAL MEMO BOOKS, PENS, MAGNIFYING GLASSES, BALLOT FOR BEST DRESSED CHARACTER, and of course a plate, napkin, fork, knife, spoon, water glass, and wine glass.We did have a prize for "Best Dressed to Kill" and a separate prize for whomever solved the case. (We explained to our guests at the beginning that if more than one person guessed the murderer correctly, that we had already picked a number between 1-10 and that whoever got closest would win the prize, which ended up being what happened.) Next time I think I will include a prize for whoever is the actual murderer since they have to be so sneaky the entire night and have no shot at winning the other prize of correctly guessing the murderer.The murderer will learn that they are the murderer on the first pages of their character booklet. Unfortunately for our murderer, they happened to be a terrible liar and started sweating profusely immediately, haha. Luckily no one really noticed, but as a host or hostess I would recommend that there are several pitchers of water available to your guests to refill their glasses as they play because it is easy to get caught up in the game and not realize someone is dying of thirst and an empty glass.... ...oops.As the host and hostess, we played the game not knowing who the murderer was and so we each got to cast an accusation at the end, and I was glad we did it that way, because I don't know if I would have accidentally revealed to much knowing who it was the whole time. I drank a lot of wine as the game went on.The instructions say that the game will take about 3 hours, it could really swing one way or the other depending how your night goes. We pulled it off in about 2.5, but we talked for ages afterwards, so it really rounded out to being longer than expected.Be sure to set up your dinner table (where your game will be played) so that everyone can see everyone else and no one has their back turned, because you don't want to miss out on any little clue.Hopefully that helps answer a lot of questions about how this game goes, I know it can be overwhelming at first, but the little character booklets really keep your guests moving through the game. 5Great partyThis game was so fun! I am an actor and some of my guests are too and the other guests were specifically chosen for being creative. This game is very improv based so if you or your friends are looking for a complete script this isn't a good game for you.I didn't understand how this would work as I refused to open the booklets until the party; so I'll enlighten you. The game starts with each character getting a bit about themselves with some juicy secrets. Then the host reads the police report and we used the facts we had just learned to start talking. Being actors we kind of just looked at our dialogue and paraphrased it though you could read it verbatim if you wanted. Each chapter has things the character has to say at some point and reactions they are to have when another character tells a story (also if you are to read your clue during that chapter) again. We just looked at it and talked and such slowly eating and telling the stories rather than reading out of the book and sounding fake. At the end you cast your votes and the murderer reveals themselves.You MUST have 8 guests and each guest is a suspect and partakes in the game. Invitations and name tags come for each character too but in the digital age sending out invites isn't really a thing. Some recipes for the courses come and I used them as inspiration but made my own menu. I did 4 courses and had each chapter start at the top of the course so we could eat and talk.The only reason I took a star off was because the rules are vague and you don't understand what you're doing until after the first round. Also, you find out right away if you are the murder and have to spend the whole game lying and making things up which is good if your Murderer is a good liar. If it would have been nice for everyone to try to figure out the mystery.It took about 2 1/2 hours to play which is a good length I think. If you want to sit at a table for 4 hours then there are other kits out there but who wants to sit there that long!!? 4Thrilling dinner party game!What a thrilling dinner party! A Taste for Wine is set in Napa Valley, California, at the Underwood Winery. The kit includes everything you need for an evening of drama and accustation. Invitations, character booklets, secret clues, party planning guide, and place cards help set the stage. And the character names are hilarious! A CD is included with an account of the opening scene (murder!), along with summaries of each round of dialog. Finally, Bridget Bordeaux wraps up the event by naming the killer. We only used the CD for the beginning and end, after sharing our best guess of the murderer's identity. Wonderful fun! 5So much fun! Definitely agree with other reviewersSo much fun! Definitely agree with other reviewers. The additional two characters aren't necessary. Great for two people who are hesitant to participate but want to be included. The other six characters were great. We laughed and gasped. Fake accents were used. It was a great evening. Can't wait to host another. 5Invite fun people, add great foodThe game is definitely what you put into it, meaning who you invite, decor, food, etc..Invite fun people, add great food, some decor especially beads, make your guests feel special, use your best Southern accent and yes...booze will make it even more fun. Accents are a must. There were some fun twists too. Don't stick strictly to the script, ad lib, throw in a joke, wink and flirt.No one really knew how the game would work, so we just went forward taking turns beginning each chapter. I have a feeling you should probably read in order of the secret clues which are number 1-8.And since the murderer finds out that it is them self early on, I sent a letter to everyone saying so and that the murderer would have to put on their best poker face and sleuth and accuse so as to put attention on others.We gave this dinner party on April 1st, and I went all out, even sending teasers through the mail and email regarding accents, coming in costume, putting on your poker face if you are the murderer, and threw in some juicy gossip. Totally Southern menu...fresh squeezed juice Hurricanes, peach iced tea, good Bourbon, crab/avocado stack, spiced pecans, pickled okra, pimento cheese, chicken/andouille gumbo, voodoo garlic bread, a simple salad, bread pudding and cheesecake. We decorated the garage lights with masks and beads, the front porch also and a 'Mask On' sign on the door, bought a $6 Mardi Gras plastic mural for the entry (tacky but definitely fun), beads from the lights, even the bathroom had a touch. I didn't want to do a Vegas style flashiness sticking with simple gold masks for decor, beads, flowers and candles.I think making sure your guests feel special makes a huge difference. We greeted everyone at the door, place a few strands of beads around their necks, their name tag, and had them select their own glass (we had a few different choices and no one knew what they would be drinking) then took them to the beverages, passing out more beads as they refilled their glasses. We began on the back patio with appetizers, socializing, backgrounds and chapter 1, then on to the dining room for dinner, where I offered this toast 'To Pierre, may your death remind us all....Watch your back.', chapter 2 & 3, we retired to the living room for chapter 4, then had coffee and dessert with accusations. I did guess the murderer, who got a jar of 'moonshine' for his prize and the best actor/actress received Cajun cooking products as a prize. I think if you had people who were willing, it would be so much fun to have women play the male roles and men play the femail roles.We work so hard in this country. Stop a moment. Celebrate life. Throw a party. 4
