Customer Reviews

I bought 2 for my little garden explorersThis has a built in light. It has a handy carrying handle. Takes a little practice to snap the lid on secure. My kids love making dirt/leaves/bark habitats for creepy crawly critters and they love turning on that little lamp feature too. I do like I can rinse out the base and the air holes are a good size. Just enough for the worms and bugs to breathe ....but not large enough to escape. Thank goodness! I do make my kiddos release their little bugs back into nature. These little critter carriers keep them busy for a long time. I tried buying one to share....and quickly ordered a second one. 5Great Insect Home!!Excellent Bug Buddy. I love all the cool features and there is loads of room for my little friends. The size is perfect for the insects I find in my home during winter. I use to keep them in pickle jars until spring when I let them go, but this is so much nicer. The night light is very bright and the carrying handle is a plus. The top is secure just don't pick the barn up by the sides - it causes the lid to pop off. With a little ingenuity and TCL this little critter barn can become an insectopia.I usually find anywhere between 10 to 15 stink bugs in my home during the winter months. They find their way in during the dogs days in August and come out when they are hungry in October. As I have a kind heart, I keep them until spring. I feed them oranges, apples, cherries and bananas. They seem to enjoy oranges the best and feed 3 to 4 times daily. I grow oat grass for my cats and put that on the bottom - it's purpose is to bring them close to the outdoors and to also catch the bug droppings. The longer I keep them the friendlier and smarter they become. I think with the proper adult supervision, a child could use this critter barn to learn to care for an insect like a small pet.All in all, great purchase. I'm glad I found this - it really helps in discovering, learning and caring for nature. 5NiceNice for my 4 year old. Only problem we have is the lid comes off too easily. 4He absolutely loved the fact that there was a light on the ...I bought this for my 5yo son when we went camping. He absolutely loved the fact that there was a light on the roof to see the insects in the dark. He couldn't stop showing off his new toy to his fellow campers. One star was taken off because of the clear screw lid for the hole to put the insect into the box. It was tied to the box with a very thin plastic tie, but that snapped off very quickly and my son kept losing that lid. I had to search for that transparent lid on the campsite several times. Other than that, this is a great way to keep your kids interested in nature and all its beautiful critters. 4Overall a great buy. My granddaughter absolutely loves thisOverall a great buy. My granddaughter absolutely loves this, and has been capturing bugs every day. It could be improved by putting a clasp on the lid to keep it secure, it comes off far to easily and we've had a few escapees in the house. 4Get a shoeboxThe green lid doesn't fasten correctly. When your child tips it over whatever is inside is gonna get out. The magnifying glass doesn't work. Tiny area 1Bugs escape and handles/lid not secured firmlyMy kids are excited to learn about bugs and I'm excited to end the stigma that spiders are bad. I've managed to catch several house spiders and we'd been keeping them in glass Ball canning jars but I was excited to get these critter keepers instead since it has a light and I could easily add bugs and the kids could enjoy watching the feast. Well, I've put two house spiders (a parson spider and a domestic house spider. Neither spider are very large but neither are tiny, either and have been significantly larger than any of the small holes that are in this critter barn. Both times I tried to use the barn, the spiders were gone by morning. I have yet to figure out how they escaped but after several days of carefully inspecting the box to be sure they weren't hiding REALLY REALLY WELL, I took the lid off for a better inspection and confirmed that, yes, I managed to let two spiders loose in my daughter's room. Very disappointed that we'll have to continue to use the canning jars since it's harder to add bugs when you've caught a web-spinning spider (disturbing the web every time you insert a bug). The second issue with these is that we took them down to the creek in case we came across any interesting critters. The handles kept popping out while my kids were carrying them even though I made sure the handles were secure before giving to them. They were not rough with these at all - carried them like normal by the handle only to have the handles pop out on the sides. If we had caught a frog or anything with weight, there is no way the handles would have held while carrying the box around.Aside from the mystery of the disappearing house spiders and the handles not being more secure, they are nice little critter barns. I would recommend them for ages 4+ because the lids and handles can easily pop off if a small child were to "play" with the barn while a critter was inside. Even when I've made sure the lid is properly closed, I don't trust it to not pop off...it's too easy to open, in my opinion. The light and the largeness and ability to add more bugs without having to remove the entire lid is wonderful, but I've determined that my kids can only use the boxes for observation and (not actually handle the boxes) to prevent any escaped critters which is disappointing. 3They need to secure the lid somehowThis is really cool and exactly what we wanted, and would be five stars except for one big flaw: the lid does not have any mechanism to secure it to the box. It doesn't snap on or have any kind of closure to keep it in place which is kind of a necessity for a box designed to hold critters that kids might want to bring into the house to check out and show the family. Because the lid's not secure my son can't bring anything into the house with this, which defeats the purpose. (and no, we don't capture critters and keep them hostage for days on end, but we do like to bring them inside for a little while and ooh and aww over how cool they are before we release them back to their home.) For some this might not be a big deal but for me it is. 3Perfect for the budding junior naturalist. It s getting loads of use and holding up well. Many frogs, toads, fireflies, caterpillars, and other bugs have had temporary housing in this little habitat. It s much easier to see into than previous habitats we ve had. The size seemed a bit small at first, but it s not a permanent home, so it definitely works as it is. Just gives my son a chance to observe, photograph, & ID various critters - he is a naturalist at heart, so this thing is a must have item for our family. :-) The light is a nice feature. The air holes are great but not large enough to let the various critters we have observed out of the habitat. I liked the door better on a previous model we had, but all in all this habitat has more pros than that one did. So thumbs up from this nature loving family. 5The light hasn't been too useful but it's a nice featureThis is exactly what we were looking for for our 3 year old. She's obsessed with bugs and frogs. The light hasn't been too useful but it's a nice feature. I knocked off 1 star since there is no clasp or locking mechanism for the box. A few times she's dropped it and lizards and frogs have flown out. Other than that, awesome. 4
