Customer Reviews

Good reference for child, Good company serviceThis was a Christmas present for my then 4 year old son. There may be far nicer globes for sale; we wanted a good reference for him that was not too expensive or so nice that we could not frequently pull it down from the dresser to look over. This globe is exactly what we needed. The base is fairly flimsy and plastic. We made sure to give warnings of how to be gentle with the globe. It is not a toy to be manhandled as my son is well capable of doing. In fact, after about half a year of owning the globe, he broke the plastic pin that holds the globe at the bottom. I think it broke while he attempted to put it back into the stand. I contacted Replogle, described the broken piece, and they quickly sent a replacement part. THANK YOU REPLOGLE!If you look at the equator, the lines are slightly, off. Enough to drive a perfectionist mad when they focus on the lines. And yeah, being a 12" globe, the type is fairly small. They fit a lot of detail into the globe. We did not buy this as a museum piece, or to go into a nice library. This globe is great for a child, which I believe was the intended user. This is an excellent student globe. 4Great globe.I purchased this knowing it was a cheap globe, and it is, but it's fine for our use at home to show where different countries are located to our grand daughter. The colors are vivid and the seams are well matched up. Wish the base was a little heavier so it didn't tip over so easily but otherwise it's a fine globe. 5Great for the priceI guess people expect a globe to be super heavy like the vintage globes I've seen in libraries, but I didn't want to spend way over $100 for that. This globe is perfect for teaching my kids about the world, and I don't need to be afraid of letting them use an expensive globe. It's not easily damaged, it's just light, because it's made of plastic. It's been on my 5 year old daughter's bedroom for several months, she plays with it and it holds up just fine. 5Decent globe for the pricePretty good globe. The stand is made of plastic, and yes it is quite flimsy as other reviewers have noted. This would not be a good "toy" for unsupervised play. For the price though, I don't mind supervising my (very young) child.Others have complained that the longitude lines don't meet up at the equator, which in some cases is true, they are off by a teeny tiny bit. Many of the lines don't actually reach all the way to the equator though so it isn't all that distracting. Also, I researched every globe I could find prior to purchasing this one and even the very expensive globes had reviews with the same complaint. It is nicely colored for visual, and has raised areas for mountains, etc for the kids to touch too. Only moderately fun to spin due to flimsiness of the stand (it jiggles quite a bit), but if I hold the stand, it spins smoothly enough.Another reviewer complained the globe falls right off the stand repeatedly. Ours hasn't done that yet, but we are pretty careful with it. 4Disappointing, poor quality. Don't get this globe.Very disappointed. Extremely poor quality control, and cheaply made: Map sections do NOT meet cleanly. Some do not even touch each other at higher and lower longitudes, and others leave streaks across continents where map sections don't align correctly. Stand is cheap plastic that wobbles. Do NOT be fooled by the claim that this is a good starter for students. Besides streaks of "empty" spaces in continents, North Americas' Rocky Mountains topographical underpinnings remove 80 percent of the width of that mountain range. The only reason I gave it one star is it at least depicts the relative sizes and positions of the continents. If this globe is an indication of Replogle products quality, find another maker and get a decent globe. 1Globe is OK, stand is flimsy. As others have noted, this globe is about what you would expect for the price. The country and place names are all up to date and readable. (Google Earth is much more detailed but harder to use and doesn't really give you the actual 3 dimensional experience).Don't expect the type of quality globe you used to see in school classrooms. The surface is just glued on paper strips with noticeable joints. The stand is incredibly cheesy; very thin plastic that practically bends in the wind. It is so lightweight that I feared it would blow off my desk. I added plaster of paris to the inside bottom for extra stability. But still it is a practical learning device. Just handle it very gently! 3Nice Globe, Great Delivery, Poor QCThis is a nice looking globe, but the clearance between the support arc and the globe was not enough to permit it to rotate freely. It kept getting stuck on South America. I tried to swap it out on Amazon, but Amazon will only permit a return, which I did. I will reorder it to see if this was a one of. Their QC should have caught this. I ordered it the Thursday before Xmas. It was supposed to be here Christmas eve and it actually made on Friday, like only a day and a half delivery. Awesome. 3Good Quality. Clear location descriptions.Very nice size and clear location descriotions. Very easy to move from place to place. The only down side to it, if you care about this, is that the base is made out of plastic Which again makes it very light weight but probably easy to break. Its still in good shape and I had no problems with it. and I like it. I paid the low 40's which is a great price for this particular item. 4Nice Globe for childrenI bought this for my daughter because she loves maps. She has really enjoyed this item. This seems sturdy enough for regular use. My daughter enjoys spinning it around and finding different countries. However, I wouldn't expect it to stand up to being carried around frequently. Overall, I am pleased with this purchase. I think it was well worth what I paid for it.Update: 12/06/2013 - My daughter is 6 now and we still use it frequently. While I have seen several complaints regarding the globes flimsiness we have had no problems with anything breaking or coming apart after 2 years of use. 4I chose this as my grandson's first globe because it ...I chose this as my grandson's first globe because it was grown-up and would last him for decades, not a juvenile item that would be discarded long before it would be used consistently and purposefully. Other factors: large size, quality construction, reputable brand, maps in relief, blue ocean, long-term usefulness. 5
