Made My Wife The One Who Says, "Let's Play a Game".My wife is not a strategy game fan. I am. This was always a problem when it came to game night (which is most nights) until I decided to buy this game after seeing it demonstrated at a Con. As you can see from other reviews, this game, for some reason, seems to interest the otherwise unimpressed wives of gamers in their hobby. The game sets up quickly, is uncomplicated yet allows for strategic flourishes, is inexpensive and can be played in 15-20 minutes. Luck does influence play more than other games of this genre, but that isn't a problem for us. We bought Dominion and one expansion after this, but almost never play it due to the huge setup time and more complicated play. We did buy a second deck and an expansion for Star Realms which was better bang-for-buck for us. Star Realms is now our go-to quick game fix. 5A Story to Attest to the Quality of this Game. This game is insanely fun. I've played several TCG, CCG, Deckbuilders and more, as I'm kind of a card game fanatic (mostly Yu-Gi-Oh and Hearthstone). I'm gonna tell you all a little story, which attests to the quality of this product:It was a Thursday Night when I was 16, as I stepped into a card shop off El Toro street in Orange County, CA. The venue was hosting a Thursday Night board game get-together (which, to my knowledge, still exists), where I wanted to meet some new faces. An older gentlemen was playing with another younger man with Star Realms, which I was offered to play. I sat down, the older gentlemen taught me how to play in 5 minutes, and I beat him with a Green Rush Deck! I thanked him and walked out. Four years later, I stumbled upon a game called "Star Realms", which happened to look a lot like that one Spaceship game I played years ago. I remembered how much fun it was, and picked it up to play with my friends. I played my first round in 4 years, and still remembered every mechanic and strategy I had prior, it was that easy! Soon after, all 6 of my friends wanted to learn, and currently 4 of them have a copy of the game + the expansion ready to play. The game is so fun and engrossing, even years after one experience trying the game, and only a few rounds with my friends, we were all hooked. There isn't another title like it.TL/DR: After playing the game once, 4 Years later me and my friends instantly got hooked. A must-buy for anyone looking to have fun! 5It's really that goodI'm a gamer....I've played a ton of games and I really enjoy deckbuilders. I knew I was going to love this game. The art is awesome, the graphic design is perfect, and it plays pretty fast. What I didn't foresee is that my wife, who's a total non-gamer, absolutely loves this game probably more than I do. We've played it about 10 times in the last week and she just wants to play more and more. I think what she likes about it is the simple rules, the intuitive symbols (not a lot of reading on the cards), the simple set-up, and the speed of the game. She's starting to see card combos, she's starting to project next turn, and she's forming long term strategy. She likes it so much she told me to buy another set for 4 player games. It's totally a dream come true for me...I have a gamer wife! At least for one game, and that's a pretty good selling point. It's really that good. 5Great game for couples, families, and friend groups! Plus free digital game!My husband and I are always looking for new games we can play with just each other, so when a friend of ours recommended this game saying he and his girlfriend play it together frequently and really enjoy it we quickly bought our own set! The game is very easy to learn and has multiple variations of game play for groups of 3 or more. When you play with only two players most games don't take long to play, but each time is different enough that you can easily play several games in a row without getting bored. We like to play a few rounds while watching baseball games, or just a couple right after dinner. The decks are easy to travel with as well so we've started bringing them with us when we go visit friends in other states so we can play multiplayer versions. Additionally, there's a free app you can download to play against a computer and has challenges to test your skills. You can pay something like $4.99 for the full version that allows online play and playing with a friend. 5Great game for fans of MTG and other strategy games! This game is a blast! If you are a fan of Magic the Gathering this game will feel very familiar! The game was actually created by two MTG world champions and it shows in similar game mechanics. I would recommend this game for people who enjoy strategy and/or collectable card games. This game does require some focus and paying attention and would probably not be well suited for large parties where people like to jump in and out of play. Stick to poker for those game nights.Pros:-Fun Game-Easy to learn-No need for costly cards or "Pay to Win"-Nice blend of chance/strategyCons:-Can be slightly repetitive-Multiplayer game rules not 100% clear(must buy multiple full game sets to obtain 15-20 cards from the set. One set's ship pile is used not both from what I can tell)Differences between this and MTG:-All players start with same starter deck. There is no pre-building-Very few cards are persistent between turns-Drawing occurs at the end of players turns-Phases are blended(you can attack multiple times and buy ships at any point on your turn up until you draw)-Decks are "built" from a shared trade row that is accessible for all players-Card cost is resolved at time new cards are acquired and not when they are played-Card cost is paid once only-There are no player actions off turn(no instants etc...)Secret Tip: There is a an iPad/PC/Android app that has a free demo. The game is much easier to understand with the actual cards but the demo will at least give you a taste of the mechanics. 5Fun, easy to learn deck building gameStar Realms is a well designed space themed deck building game where two or more players compete to be the last person with authority points. Note, one deck supports two players, two decks supports up to four players, and three decks supports up to six players. The basic idea of the game is to purchase cards from the trade row of six shown cards (five are random and one is static) to build a deck which can be used to: buy more cards, attack opponents, and draw more cards among other actions. Each player starts with 50 authority points, and when attacked will lose authority, and may gain authority from actions on purchased cards or events (if using the events expansion). The last player with authority wins. With this base version of the game (no expansions) if there are more than two players are several variants which allow for co-op play. One where players team up with other players to beat the other teams, and another "hydra" version where all players are working together to destroy one more powerful player.Unlike many other build-a-deck style games, this game allows players to do most actions in any order. For example if a player has two cards that allow them to draw a card and other cards to spend 10 coin, they can draw a card, buy a some cards, then draw their other card. Or they could draw their two cards first, then spend their money. Or they could spend their money then buy two cards, and soPros:-Easy to learn. The instructions are fairly minimal and most cards to a good job describing themselves without additional explanation.-Quick games. Once all players have played several games and understand the basic game mechanics a two player game tends to be about a half hour or less.-High quality cards with beautiful detailed graphics-High replay valueCons:The only downside that I have discovered with this game is by the end of a game it can be difficult to keep track of which parts of each card have already been resolved and which parts can still be activated.Personal thought: It seems that there are enough trade cards to support more than two players with one deck but there are not enough authority or starting hand cards (money an attack) to support more so it wouldn't be too difficult to just reduce the number of starting hand cards and count authority via dice or some other means to support more players with one deck.I also own all expansions which each add something worth while to the game if you like the base set. If I had to pick two to buy (hard to pick just one) I would get Events and Gambit.Events adds... you guessed it... event cards to the game. They are shuffled in to the trade deck and randomly pop up during game play. When an event card is revealed its effects are immediately executed. Some hurt everybody, some help everybody, but all effect everybody.Gambit adds solo variances, co-op variances, and cards which can be given to players at the beginning of the game to give them an edge. My wife and I like to use gambits to help players who have been in a slump. On the first game we each start with one random gambit. Every game after the player who most recent won only gets one gambit, but the other player gets one card for each game in a row they have lost since last winning. So if my wife has won the last three games in a row she gets one gambit card and I get four. There are countless ways that these gambit cards can be used like this.Overall I feel that this game is well worth a try. If you are looking for a highly rated inexpensive game definitely give this one a look. 5Star Realms Review by Dad's Gaming AddictionStar Realms: 2 Players*, Ages 12+, Average Play Time = 15-20 Minutes Star Realms is a very different kind of deck-builder, at least, that was my first impression. For one, you don t have access to ALL of the available/purchasable cards from the get go like you do with Dominion it s more like Star Trek Deck Building Game: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation Deck Building Game that way. I also took a liking to how there were four different factions and how their effects chained together. It made me consider cards from the trade row that I normally wouldn t have purchased. There s also the odds factor to consider as the discard pile is shuffled each time your deck runs out there s no guarantee that your factions cards of the same type will come up together in the same hand. The bases were also something I had to get used to as normally, all of your cards are discarded before your turn ends. Since some act as a defense against attacks, they can add an extra security blanket for when things go horribly wrong. Bases also have abilities that they can use EVERY turn they are in play making them an ideal pick for when you have the money to burn on new cards. Since new trade cards are drawn to replace purchased cards, you never know what s going to come up making each game satisfying random and unpredictable. For you experienced deck-builder gamers out there, you ll be pleased to know that yes, you can scrap cards to remove dead-weight from your deck. Star Realms starts out a bit slow (one damage here, two damage there) but after about fifteen minutes whoa boy, watch the damage numbers fly! It quickly becomes a race to see who can out-damage the other guy (or girl) more quickly, making me rethink my strategy to invest in a lot of cards that yield money. Still, the player will have plenty to think about, what with the faction bonuses and the ever-changing pool of available trade cards. As such, Star Realms makes an excellent introductory game to the genre and is light and portable to boot. It s well worth the twelve to fifteen bucks you can find it for on Amazon. 4Extremely fun self contained card battle game.Got this for my daughter who enjoys the app on my phone (it s free with some paid in app purchases). I wanted to be able to play against her and I m all about having a physical game to play in lieu of an app.The Good+Extremely portable. It s just a deck of cards in a box that only fits that deck of cards (you d be surprised how novel this is in hobby games)+great art work! The cards are brightly colored and the ships all look really cool+ Fun card battle system! Ships of the same factions work together to grant bonuses, but what will you do if a ship of the faction you want isn t on the trade row?+No pay to win or endless collections of blind packs and rare cards. If you ve ever been into collectible card games, you know it gets expensive. You have everything here to keep playing for a long time without having to buy anything extra (although I ve heard the expansions are cool)I don t have anything bad to say about it. It s a fun card battle game. I d say try before you buy with the app. 4Easy to learnHighlights: Easy to learn, well balanced, very high quality cards, inexpensive, high replay value. While the theme doesn't really play out that strongly (they could have skinned it with anything cohesive), the gameplay is excellent. Very smooth deck builder. The faction mechanic really allows for some great combo plays while also adding in a secondary strategy layer to the game. It also has a decent number of cards that allow for card trashing, extra card draws, and forcing opponents to discard on their turn. That aspect helps to allow for a more dynamic game. Some deck builders make the trashing mechanic a little too rare for my liking. The cards themselves are also well balanced and play together nicely. Every game I've played so far has felt very competitive (about a dozen). FYI, the companion app is free if you want to play against an AI to get the rules down. 5Easy to pick-up family game with nice depth and balance.6/21 Update: Playing it more and more each week. The game is addictive, fun, simply, and deep.New family favorite with my 11 and 8 year-olds ... and playing it a LOT. The great thing about this game is that it is super easy to learn ... on the order of 5 minutes of watching a game, and as we continue to play we learn new layers to the strategy. The game gets deeper as you play it.By definition it's a card game, which means there is randomness to it. The way you control that randomness and focus on strategy is primarily two ways:1) The cards you choose to buy and add to your hand.2) Your ability in certain circumstances to scrap (remove from the current game) weaker cards from your deck as the game goes on.I could ding the game for a couple of minor presentation points, but it would not be worth it.This game is easy to pick up, gets deeper as you play it, and PORTABLE. We take it everywhere. We currently play it 2-player, which I like since there is no decision on which family member to pick-on for damage. Maybe that will change, but 2-player is working for our family 5
