Customer Reviews

Have to see it to believe it!Works great for small objects! My favorite thing to put inside is some water. It's incredible and nobody can believe what they're seeing! Be very cautious, the mirrors will scratch from just about anything. I used a damp cloth to wipe the mirrors off as the instructions say, and still scratched the entire mirror. I ordered an extra one because of other reviewers saying the same thing. My sister and grandparents and friends have all loved it! For $7 it's worth five stars. If they charged $20 it would be a different story. If ur looking for a fun toy for adults or children, I recommend this completely! 5Works as intended, with a bit of practiceThe mirascope is something I've wanted to get since I was a little kid, so I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it could be had for a few bucks online. The product is simple and light, which was to be expected with the price point. The reflective surface is easy to scratch, so a bit of care is needed. All that being said, the illusion works quite well with a small object placed right at the dead center. Other than the included plastic frog, rings and coins seem to be the best fits. 5Cheap, too small to be cool. Very poor quality. Don't waste your time.Cheap junk. Too small to really have a cool effect with anything larger than a penny. My dad had one of these and i remember messing with it as a kid. Our was much larger and much more durable. I wanted to get one to pique my toddlers curiosity about sciencey stuff. All I could fibs was cheap crap. If you even do so much as imagine cleaning the mirrored surface, the coating will rub off. I used the absolute softest microfiber cloth I could find to gently wipe off a streak, and the finish scratched. The most infuriating part of it all is that I was looking to buy a larger higher quality mirascope and would not have minded paying 3x the cost of this one...if i could only have found such a thing. Looks like you are either stuck with D.I.Y. or cheap junk. 1EnlighteningYou can tell a lot about a person by the way they approach an unknown object. I put this on the counter to amuse customers. Some of them are intrigued and try to figure it out. Some people are just amazed at the illusion. But the majority of people...I don't know, they start attacking it. They literally swat at the hologram, and for the life of me, I can't figure out why. It's hilarious. I had to cover it up the viewing hole and put it on a shelf so no one would break it.The illusion is cool. Works great with small objects, about the size of a quarter at most. I tried to wipe down the mirrors, and they scratch really easily. Be careful. 5Nice toy for kids and worth the price paid, be very careful when cleaning mirror surfaces!Be very careful when cleaning the mirror surfaces, they are very easily scratched and I ruined mine by just trying to wipe the accumulated dust off the bottom mirror with a cotton cloth! If you need to clean I would recommend using a can of compressed air, you cannot clean anything that requires wiping as the mirror will scratch and affect will be lost. Does what it says and overall worth the price (less than $10). I would rate it higher if it were a bit larger to accommodate some larger objects and if the base was attached to the bottom mirror piece (the small round bottom is a separate piece), it would also be nice if the top mirror somehow locked onto the bottom mirror (maybe like a quarter turn twist to lock or similar). The frog that comes with it is very small but does look cool floating in the air, you cannot use an object that is much larger than the frog that it comes with. It is cool that you can move your finger through the projected object and it doesn't stop you from seeing parts of the object where your finger is not blocking it (unless you have very large fingers that will block the whole object. You have to view the floating object at about a 45 degree angle, if you are looking from the side or more than a 45 degree angle the object will disappear but I cannot fault the product for that since that is just how the mirror reflection works. It is a neat toy for kids and they will be amazed by the floating object. 3Exactly as expectedCheap, all plastic, and won't work for anything much bigger than a centimeter or 2, but for a small item, it works.Seems the plastic mirror scratches easily, so need to be careful setting it up, also not very stable. For what I paid I got exactly what I expected and wanted: something to sit on my desk at work as an occasional conversation piece.I work in the finance industry, so a few coins stuck (little bit of glue) around the top with a AU$2 coin inside the device, appears to be sitting amongst the other coins, but cannot be picked up :) 4I love this thingI saw one of these about 40 years ago on a vacation with my parents. I remember being amazed by it at that time. I was probably about 9. I had really wanted one. When I saw this on Amazon for under $10, I decided to get one both for myself and to show my children. There are much more expensive ones and I was concerned that my sub $10 one would have an issue. But the reviews were good so I gave it a go.It DID NOT disappoint. The optical illusion is very cool and very convincing. It's small size and simple black exterior makes it a non imposing addition to any decoration and an interesting conversation piece for those who have not seen one of these. The coolest thing is the short mental disorientation when one tries to touch the frog and your finger goes right through it. 5Economically-priced Illusion Limited by Size and Durability Reflecting (pun intended) much of what has been said, this mirascope is worth the small price, if only serving as a table/desktop conversation piece. The quality is as you'd expect for the price....all plastic with highly polished mirror surfaces but which are VERY prone to scratches, and of limited use given the small size. I found, suprisingly, that even a very fine microfiber cloth would scratch the mirrors. So, the best advice I can offer is do not touch the mirrored surfaces and, when placing an object in or removing it from the mirascope, do so very gently. The small size of this mirascope does greatly limit you on the size of objects that can be effectively imaged by it. The small frog works well for the most part, its upright pose lending to the three-dimensionality of the reflected image but also positioning the head of the frog high enough that from some viewing angles, the full body cannot be reflected. For the photos provided, I positioned my camera at what seemed the best angle of view, finding that to be about 55 from the horizontal plane of the mirascope top. Overall however, perhaps the very best result was obtained with what I've seen most often depicted in images of the Mirage - a penny. The depth of the penny is enough to lend some 3D relief to the image but the penny is short enough that it greatly expands the viewing angles from which the penny can be effectively viewed and indeed appear as if resting atop the mirascope. The diameter of a penny also seems optimum, in that the penny still appears realistically flat. Trying a larger coin, the result was that the coin appeared bowed rather than flat. Using something such as a penny would allow passersby to more quickly notice the realism of the resulting reflected image whereas the frog would need a more precise angle of view to appreciate. The image of the mirascope as depicted in the description is highly misleading; at no time does any part of the imaged item extend above the surface of the mirascope in the way it is shown. That product photo probably has the actual plastic frog sitting upon something to elevate it above the opening in the top. It is impossible to achieve such an image with a mirascope. The image formed by a mirascope is a reflection upon the interior parabolic mirror surface, thus that surface must appear as the background to the image relative to your viewing angle. Similarly, if you try and poke your finger "through" the imaged object, you cannot. Instead, as your finger is actually in front of the reflection, you will simply block that part of the reflected image. This is shown in the provided photos where I extend a red plastic rod inside the well of the mirascope - The rod does not go through the penny but instead just obscures it.For the price, I'd say this is one of the more effective illusions one can find, and it does invite exploring what objects can be imaged the best. The real limiting factor is the small size of this mirascope; while lending itself well to being displayed on a table without needing a lot of space, a larger mirascope would be more "fun" to play with, especially if the mirrored surfaces tolerate a bit of abuse from touching, cleaning, etc. Needless to say, a larger mirascope built of high quality materials and optics could become rather pricey. 4This thing is pretty cool. The little frog image does not show ...This thing is pretty cool. The little frog image does not show up as brightly as illustrated, but it is still striking. It's the kind of thing that might set a kid to thinking about why things work. The parabolic mirrors seem good. This gadget takes some head-scratching to figure out. It comes apart easily to investigate.Hint: you need to see the reflection in two mirrors, or the frog image would be upside down. Try holding a flashlight near your face -- shine it on the image and it will light up just like it was really there. (However, the image of the frog is facing the opposite direction as the little model.) Shine the light directly down to see the brightest overall image. 4Great BUTI really wish I could give this product 5 stars. I got this and the first thing I noticed was scratches and discoloration I guess you could call it. It still works perfectly fine but just the fact that I got it like that was a bit annoying. Also buyer beware this scratches INCREDIBLY easily. Awesome product still 4
