Customer Reviews

It's not a bad game at all, but does have some flaws that worth mentioning.Tsuro of the Seas is one of those games that isn't too competitive and very laid back. It doesn't require too much skill and could be played for almost all ages for a fairly large amount of people. It's a game that's very easy to learn, very easy to get into and also...very easy to lose interest in...if you're not careful. One of the great things about Tsuro of the Seas is that it has dice mechanics. Which means there is luck involved. However, this game could be played just like the original Tsuro by removing the dice and the dragons for an even more pleasant and easy going gaming experience. but, even with the tension of dice rolling involved and the impending doom of ferocious dragons, the game has a slow pace that seems to fluctuate its speed between slightly fast and steady throughout a single gameplay.Tile placement and drawing can get a bit tedious and most smart players often stay on the edge of the board, avoiding the majority of the dragons which means avoiding most of the action. The core mechanic of this game rely solely on the dragons the dice movement, which is actually a very cool idea until someone gets eliminated in which case they sit around and roll dice for the dragon movements and even then the level fun drops by about a fraction. And when there are 3 or less people still remaining the board the game seems to drag-on (no pun intended). In some cases, you'd probably to have implement "House Rules" to keep the game going and more interesting.I don't think this game is bad, I just feel that this game needs the right gaming group and also a big group of players (8 maximum), I think a good group for this game is around 4-6 at least. Don't worry about age group, because this game can be a fun family game and could played with almost anyone who understand basic concept of tile placement, and dice rolling. I've had such a fun time with this game when playing with two separate gaming groups who felt that this game was a blast to play but also felt that it could go on and on and early player elimination would suck so much.Get this game for some good family fun on a quick game night, get this game if you want something a little easy going with your gaming nights, get this game if you want to take a break from some of your more tense gaming sessions. get this game for a large gaming group. Don't get this game if you're looking for something that has sole competitive purposes. Overall it's a decent game that I am proud to add to my collection, hopefully you feel the same too. 4I like the ships but the dragons add something foul to a quick and streamlined gem.I still play this (with the extra spaces) just like the original. I have played it once using the dragons and the game dragged on forever. Even the person that brought the game said that it was taking too long. spaces were being cleared out in front of boats and people kept placing tiles. Perpetual madness machine. It was an oddity I am sure but even before we were very far into the game some people that have played Tsuro before thought it was taking too long to move the dragons every turn. the dragons could also set up an infinite loop, something not possible in the original.I am biased and wish I could give it 4.5 stars because it still plays well and I like the idea of moving boats, keeping them from falling over the edge of the world. The original you are moving stones for some unknown reason? but the way this game is meant to be played just adds something unnecessary. Maybe I do not like that it adds a great deal more chance; mostly I do not like the longer play time.I suppose if I were to buy this again I would again struggle with the version I was to buy. The art is very nice, the theme is better, you get more tiles, I just don't care for an added element that you don't really need. I do not like partitioning off the board so I use the extra 15 spaces and it does slow things down by about five to ten minutes per game but it is still a great filler game that can accommodate plenty of people while everyone is still arriving for game night. This is still a five star game but I paid for a three star modification and just can't let that go for some reason. It was only a few dollars and I'm pretty sure I would do it again! 4Slightly better than Candy LandI absolutely detest this game. It's far too random, often getting knocked out in the first couple of turns due to the dragons and bad luck. I enjoy games of skill and planning, which this requires almost none of. I guess I should have read up on it a bit more before purchasing. On the bright side, my 5 and 7 year old kids love it. On the down side, I often have to play it with them. I put my enjoyment of this game slightly above Candy Land. 1Just like the first Tsuro with additional chaos and increased game timesNot a bad followup to the original Tsuro, but this version adds too much chaos to the gameplay. The Daikaiju aren't a terrible addition, but complicate things way too much to keep the game as fun and easy to play as the original. The directions for the Daikaiju are also a bit confusing and may take a couple of reads/playthroughs to figure out exactly. On the bright side, you can always play without the additional rules and play the original game using this board to, in essence, have a 2-in-1 game board. If you're interested in the series, go for the first iteration unless you would rather have the option of more chaos and increased game time. As with the original, the components are top notch and it is packaged appropriately...albeit with a bit more room than needed so that tiles can slide around. This is, however, only a problem for those of us that appreciate how a game is boxed and/or have a little bit of OCD! I really enjoy the series, and highly recommend it to anyone! 3Tsuro of the Seas is also original TsuroIf you buy Tsuro of the Seas, you've effectively bought the original Tsuro as well. Tsuro plays on a 6x6 grid and the Seas game plays on a 7x7 grid. All the original movement tiles are in Seas +21 more. I used a friend's copy of Tsuro and matched up tiles, marking the extra 21 with a dot using a silver sharpie in one corner. It's visible enough and not distracting. Any time you don't want the extra complication of Tsuro of the Seas, you just remove all the monsters and stuff and the dotted 21 tiles, use those tiles to block off to a 6x6 grid and wah-bam...you can now play the original Tsuro exactly. You don't really need to remove the 21 tiles to get the same type of gameplay if you don't want to. You could leave them in, block off the 6x6 with monsters and stuff and just end up with a wider selection of tiles for a regular Tsuro game. 5Lots of fun for 2 players, optional variations to keep it challenging over timeThis is a fantastic game, and the variations allowed in this second edition/version make it possible to increase the challenge as we get better at it, or keep it simple for different age groups. As another review or two mentioned (and I am grateful for those people), this is a GREAT choice for couples looking for games that can be played in a group of 2 with as much fun as a group of 4. Also it's a very different game. I think there's a lot of very complicated, hours long strategy games out there and they end up seeming all similar. The gameplay in this one can be complex, without making incredibly difficult instructions, making it easy to ramp up at parties with people new to the game. Also, the physical parts are stunningly designed. It's a very beautiful game, laid out on the table. 5Renders 'Tsuro' obsoleteDownload the rules for original Tsuro and this game can serve as both.Tsuro is great because it's quick to set up and play. This version adds more complexity and can lengthen the game. But I've found with my sons that usually the game ends just as quickly because the increased number of variables increases both the strategy required and the element of chance.I'll assume you know how to play Tsuro. This version adds in sea monsters that move about the board. As they move, they block your way, take out laid paths, and potentially destroy your ship. Dice drive the monsters actions. Everything else is up to you...where you go, what path you lay, etc. Each turn is a little longer because you resolve the monsters each time, but the flow is quickly learned and it is still a quick pace. The instructions take a little processing to understand. But a test turn or two makes it clear if simply looking at the rules and game pieces doesn't allow you to connect the dots. The best part is that you don't even need your basic Tsuro game anymore. You can ignore the monsters and simply play it as the basic game. However, because the monsters can destroy path pieces, this version has more than enough to fill the board, so either you need to set some path pieces to the side as well, or accept that the end-game dynamic may be slightly different. 4Buy it!This is one of my favorite games of all time.If you are trying to choose between this, and the original, choose this one. It is two games in one! You can easily play without the dragons if you want. Plus, since the board is bigger, playing without the dragons is more fun. Players can enjoy feeling safe and boating along for a while... and then chaos when everyone starts to converge. One game I played had a three way tie! It was pretty cool.Awesome art and great game pieces. 5Better than the originalThis is a great game which can be short or long depending on your strategy and the randomness of the dice and tiles flipped. If you're considering the original Tsuro (land based) game, I'd recommend this version instead. For a little extra, it adds a little complexity (optional) to make the game more "interesting" Here's how it works:Tsuro (original) is a board game that requires each player to take turns adding a path tile to their own path each turn. The person who can maintain a path without running off the board the longest, wins. Now, Tsuro of the Sea is the same concept, except it adds dragons that could potentially move about the board destroying paths or the players they come across. You can play Tsuro of the Seas without the Dragons and it will be the same as the original. The best part is, if you add the Tsuro, Veterans of the Seas expansion cards. these cards add cannons to fight said dragons as well as the tidal wave card, portal tile, and the whirlpool card. Now the cool thing is, you can play part classic with or without parts dragons and add any element of the expansion cards to create different style or level of complexity you choose. And this could be a short game or long game depending on how well you plan your moves and how the threat cards shift across the board. 5Great art and quality, but not an improvment over the original.I picked up this game for the price of the original, which I love, so it was a must buy for me. The art is great and the quality is top notch. The base game is one of those simple games that anyone can enjoy and find challenging, perfect for families and great for any non-gamers.The reason it lost a star for me had to do with the added rules that come with the expansion. In addition the the base game, you also move several monsters around the board based on rolling dice. In theory, this should make game deeper or more exciting, but for me and the people I was playing with, we simply lost interest. It made the game seem completely out of our control and it really didn't matter how much thought you put into your turn, there was always a good chance that a monster would eat you. The constant rolling of dice in addition to laying a tile also seemed to drastically slow down the turns.I love the base game and the art, and it will always be a go-to game for family gatherings, but the box also contains all the extra pieces that I really don't see myself using in the future. 4
