Customer Reviews

Neat but games are simplisticThis product is worth the money I paid, however, it could use more depth in the game designs. I had expectations for my son to be able to compose games that he would enjoy playing but I think my expectation (now) was unrealistic. You can put together neat games but the aftermath enjoyment value is short of anything commercial (duh?). SO, I recommend it for the kid that wants to learn more than he/she wants to play :-) 3NO LONGER SUPPORTED by MANUFACTURERI purchased this product from Amazon.com because I trusted them to sell working products; even if sold by 3rd party. But I was wrong. This product has no value according to Mattel, the manufacturer. Mattel no longer supports the "U-create" products. They informed me that U-Create Games & Artimation is completely useless and the U-Create Music is mostly useless. Do not buy this product. 1This is crap. The software wouldn't installThis is crap. The software wouldn't install, and Mattel tech support was zero help -- and t his was back in 2009! A mere two years later, Mattel is so fed up with the product line that all online support for all U-Create products was discontinued. I can't believe Amazon is still selling this worthless piece of junk in 2015! Sure, it's a quarter of the original price, but it's not even worth that since promised server support is long gone. DO NOT think that this worthless piece of crap is a bargain! Even if it were free, you'd be wasting your time ordering it! 1Really let down - Thought this would be a hit!I ordered this for a very comuter savvy 9 year old boy and his 7 year old brother. They are both avid "gamers", so they know their way around a computer. This unit however, is not very intuitive given its target audience. This ended up being just cast aside and while I still own it, I am not sure why. It will probable be thrown away soon. Good luck if you buy this. 1bad purchase decisionOrdered this for my son, in theory he loved it and was very excited about it, in practice he cant use it... it requires online membership and software updates that are impossible to set up and obtain. A plethora of obstacles and hoops to jump through for what appears to be a discontinued item for which the software required to run it is no longer supported by the company that makes it. Spent 2 days trying to set it up and its been gathering dust for a year because we never could. 2NonfunctionalWhile the concept may be good, it simply does not work. When installing the software on Max OS X 10.6, it updates twice (good), then prompts for registration. The registration cannot be completed, giving an Error 3, -9807 when attempting to submit the registration. We get the Error 3, -9807 with the firewall on or off on the Mac. No tech support was available on the Mattel site, and numerous other customers report the same thing on the uCreate Message boards.Currently on hold with technical support for Radica / Mattel.Any childs toy that requires technical support, Wireshark and a Network Engineer to get working is a fail. 1Registration Issue Solved at least for us - VistaIf you get a code 12057 when trying to connect to the server to register (this is after you have installed the initial program and have restarted the program and done an update), you must go into IE Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Security options > and UNTICK Check for server certificate revocation. You also should not have parental controls on, be running as Admin and for good measure, you might want to kill your firewall.Good luck. 3It's a webcam and moreIt truly is only a webcam with a special function program and came with specially coded computer sheets of paper that you will want to save -so don't trash those sheets as the computer function program will not work without those. On a base level, the toy is really more of a webcam and not what some people would think -that it can (it can't!) do stop-motion animations. It boils down to what software the unit comes with and was disappointed that it cannot do stop motion play. After two weeks of play, the little kid got bored with it. 3DisappointedI purchased this item for my 6 year old daughter who is computer-literate and routinely takes her Webkinz and Beany Babies online. She loves and has long mastered the Freddy the Fish adventures. My daughter is very creative. My purchase decision was mostly based on the glowing reviews here on Amazon. The age recommendation on Amazon is 7-13. The age recommendation on the box is 8+.This product is part hard-, part software. The software offers two activities - the customization of simple computer games (3 games are available after the software update that is performed as part of the installation), and the creation of simple animated sequences (called "mash ups"). The hardware allows the user to take pictures of real-world objects or drawings, and to import the resulting images into the game design or animation as animated characters or objects.Falling ShortPossibly because this product is trying to be both a game design tool and an animation tool, it falls short on both sides. The editing tools are so simplistic that, after a few initial experiments, the resulting end product (game or "mash-up") is of no interest to the child. So if the animations and games that the kids can create with this product provide little entertainment, it could have at least been interesting to provide an open platform for the exchange of ideas and components with others. Alas, the vendor has created a completely closed system. Animations and games cannot be exported and emailed to a friend - unless they also own this product. It would have been a simple feature to export the animations as short video clips that can be put on the web or uploaded to U-Tube. There is none of that.CompatibilityI am running the software on Vista. It requires admin privileges for software updates (which it always tries to do when it starts), but can otherwise run under a restricted user account. An internet connection is required. A disclaimer on the box says that the company reserves the right to terminate the website that is needed for creating new accounts and updating the software in 2011.The "Mask" tool that is needed for editing out unwanted portions of a photo does not work for us. Every time it is selected, the software shows an error message about an "invalid activity code". I called the customer support line, but the only suggestion they provided was to reinstall the product. Since without the ability to mask a photographed object, every imported image is a rectangle. The absence of this feature takes away the last bit of fun that this product could have provided.bold Better AlternativesMy (8 year old) son plays Toon Twister 3-D - an animation game with Nickelodeon characters that produces real cartoons ($14.95). [...]. The flash animation tool is easier to use than this product and offers more dramatic creativity (free). There are various (free) online applications that allow the upload of pictures and to experiment with this technology, [...].SummaryWhile the price seems justified for what this product claims to be, it falls well short of these claims, and as a result, my children 8 and 6 have shown no interest in exploring this product further after trying it out for about an hour with my help. 2Almost a 1 Star, now a 4 StarI was first going to give this toy a 1 Star. My 11 year old daughter tried to install UCreate only for it to say, "Coming Soon." I was very annoyed that we purchased a toy that was still underdevelopment and not fully in use yet. She could only do the puzzles which were not that fun. Before putting in my 1 star review, I read the other reviews and saw that others were having the same install issues and that a few others were successful in their install. So my 11 year old and two 10 year olds sat down to try and figure it out again by themselves... and this time it worked! My kids told me they had to download all the updates, and then after the download, they received a pop up that had instructions for the username and password. They also had to put in the code there from the back of booklet included with the box. After they sucessfully registered, NO spaces (even accidentally at the end of a word), they are now playing with UCreate. They think it is fun and are initially giving it a 4 Star. So there you have it. It is possible to work and my kids figured it out without my help - Yeah! 4
