The magnets are very strong and hold the pieces on very well. The boards are made of plastic with a metal fascia for the play area. They click shut. The mechanism seems flimsy, like it could break. The hinges seem like they could fairly easily break as well. The board folds up to store the pieces, but if you have pawns standing up, it will not close. The checkers are what I would call "Barely functional" so if you can get one without the checkers cheaper, I would recommend it. Overall, for the price, a very good choice. I'm sure it will serve its purpose well! 4Awesome Chess Pieces & Board!I almost didn't purchase this product, due to many of the negative comments I read here on amazon, regarding the quality of the pieces (which is very important to me).Fortunately, I decided to take a chance and place my order anyway, primarily due to the incredibly low price, and also because I simply loved the look of the Tournament style, Staunton chess pieces that come with this set. (Look closely at some of the other travel sets you'll find online...the pieces just do not look right)I honestly don't know what some of these negative reviewers were expecting for only $11! The checker pieces are really lame, too, because if I mount my own magnets to them with hot glue, you can't "king" them, because the second piece won't stay atop the "kinged" checker. I don't. 3Nice little chess setThis is a great little chess/checkers set. I bought it to teach my son how to play, and I think it's very good quality for the price. The chess pieces seem well-made and the magnetic bases are just strong enough to hold them in place without making it hard to move them. The checker pieces aren't magnetic and are on the cheap side but they're not bad. The metallic board is cool and I like the silver/black motif, there was a small ding in one of the squares but it's very hard to see so I'm not concerned about it. I bought this for my kids that like to challenge others to games of chess and checkers. For the price it is really good quality. I am very pleased with the sizes of the pieces and that they are magnetic is a great bonus. So many times games get knocked over and pieces go flying. This one's an excellent buy at $7 with free shipping. Don't buy it if you're going to pay a big shipping charge or if the price goes up to $15.The board is twelve inches by twelve inches. The squares are 1.5 inches. King is just over 2.5 inches tall, pawns are just over 1.25 inches tall. The pieces have a pleasant Staunton design, but aren't going to win any awards.The pieces are very light, but with their magnets there isn't any danger of them falling over. The magnets are strong enough that you can turn the board completely over and have the pieces stay in place, so long as you don't knock them around.The negatives:* One of my pieces wasn't sticking to the board -- after removing the felt on the bottom, it turns out that the magnet was installed at the factory upside down. Taking out the magnet, flipping it over and gluing it in place fixed the problem nicely.* The checkers are the size of a nickle and are extremely cheap, with an unpleasant lip. They are far more cheap than you're thinking of if you are envisioning the red and black plastic checkers that many of us grew up with. Expect to just throw the checkers away. If you really wanted to play checkers with the board, it would be fairly easy to glue some cheap magnets from a fabric store into some old red and black checkers to make them magnetic (or for that matter, putting a magnet onto the included checkers might give them some more heft).* One more caveat: this board folds in half, but it's still pretty big at 12 by 6 inches by 1.5 inch thick (the pieces can be put inside). Don't expect to put this in a pocket or a small purse. It would fit easily in a backpack. 4Surprisingly pleased for such an inexpensive board!The board arrived in good shape, no missing pieces. It is the perfect size for my needs, not too big (and not too small like most portable magnetic boards). In my opinion it is a ideal size- not too big and bulky to carry around but large enough to comfortably play. You can store the chess/checker pieces when the board is folded but they are loose (I put mine in ziplock baggies). The price was good for what I got and the chess part is actually decent for the money. The cons are all with the checkers part. First, they aren t magnets like the chess pieces. Second, they are pretty small and very cheap. Third, since this is a travel set I would have liked to see some sort of organization or storage for these small very light chips. I would have paid more to have them throw in several extra. I have no doubt that we will lose a single checker piece and be out a full set rendering it useless. A small vacuum could easily suck up one of these. I ll probably need to find 24 pieces of something small and round to replace these. I was going to give a star or two but the chess part of this kit is great. Especially for traveling. 3
