Customer Reviews

I also purchased the level 1 four pack of books and a couple of the level 2 books just to see what they were like, and I'm a little disappointed in the lack ...It's just OK. My son is only 21 months old and I bought this to give him something to do in the car while commuting to and from work/daycare every day. Knowing that he's currently too young to understand that it's trying to give him instructions to do something, I thought that he could use it now to practice holding the stylus and poking things with it, and at least learning names of colors and shapes and whatnot. The only problem is that it's not made for left-handed kids. The cord on the stylus is too short for the bottom of the stylus to angle out to the left when held in a left hand, so he's constantly having to switch to his less coordinated hand, and that's causing him some frustration already. I also purchased the level 1 four pack of books and a couple of the level 2 books just to see what they were like, and I'm a little disappointed in the lack of interaction that they have if you're not doing an activity. Also, the different levels (green/orange) make it a little confusing, too. I think that over time he will find this to be more fun, but I can see him getting bored with it pretty quickly, as well. - So far, the device seems to be working just fine, although the setup instructions were a bit frustrating. The instructions tell you to go to one web address to create an account and download the operating program, but you actually need to do it somewhere else. It's also not super clear that you have to download the Leap Assistant for each book that's purchased (a process that will need to be repeated each time you buy another book) before the first use.To sum up: 1) If your kid isn't yet able to follow instructions or has a really short attention span, you may want to wait until they're a little bit older to purchase this. 2) There is a setup process needs to be done on a computer and the pad needs to be plugged into a USB port to download the audio for each book. 3) If your kids are younger, you will probably need to spend some time with them to show them how to use the pad and navigate through the activities (which is great for bonding time, but not great if you don't have that time available). 4) The books are a little pricey for what you get. 3DOES NOT WORKDO NOT BUY! ABSOLUTELY DO NOT BUY THIS!!! This is the second one I bought. I bought the purple special edition one for my daughter a year ago to help prepare her for Kindergarten. I could never get passed the 2nd step of Leap Frog connect set up. It kept telling me updates were needed. I would download the updates, it would say it was successful and then it would start all over again. I also tried on my husband's computer. I moved shortly afterward so it ended up in a box. I finally have unpacked that box and ended up with the same issue. I called Leap Frog customer service and they sent me a link to unistall and re-install the leap frog connect program to try and fix it. That didn't work so they bailed and put it on Amazon saying to contact them because it was an Amazon exclusive item. Well, of course because it had been nearly a year Amazon wasn't going to refund or echange it for me (rightfully so). I had purchased many of the books and I didn't want them to go to waste so I bit the bullet and bought a new Leap Start. GUESS WHAT? SAME FREAKING PROBLEM!!! I called Leap Frog again and got the SAME guy "Jasper". After giving him an earful he transferred me to some "upper management" that told me there is no software issue and they would be happy to replace the item. I told her that this one IS the replacement. She finally said to send her copies of my receipts and they would replace it with a DIFFERENT product. Really? I am not the only one having this issue. We researched it and so many people are having this issue. Why wouldn't Leap Frog want to try to fix their software? I'm so angry. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!!! 1DO NOT BUY!!!!I needed something educational that could keep my toddler off the tablet. I read the reviews and thought I should just try it for my self. I took the chance and purchased this and 4 of their books for my daughter. My husband downloaded the books with ease within 30 mins. And it worked well. But not for long. When it came time to turn it off the light refuse to go off. So it stayed on until to battery died by the following day. We changed the batteries and the light would blink when u touch the power button but would not stay on. Neither is there any sound. Totally useless. Didn't even get to try the books. It is a hassle to send these back considering I'm in the Caribbean. Don't be like me. Its not even worth trying for yourself. I don't like leaving bad reviews but I need to save another parent from wasting their time. 1Broken Devise.I have followed instructions to 'T' and so has my husband. When we try to get the books to work on the LeapStart Leap Frog it doesn't respond when we touch any of the books that have been downloaded. This is suppose to be the simple and easy set up for my toddler. We have even gone to leapstart page and done complete repair and reset and the leapstart still does not respond. I believe either our LeapStart devise itself is broken or the pen isn't working that is attached to the book. The only thing that comes out of our leapstart is "Touch your Leapstart book to start playing." And when we do nothing works. Not even the sample book or the basic background of the devise itself that has 'ABC's and 123's responds. I'm very upset that we have to try and find something different before Christmas for my daughter. 2Problems with this shortly after I purchased it for my daughterI bought this product about a year or so ago. It worked well in the beginning, but shortly after, it stopped working! I invested a lot of money in this product with all the purchases I made (including the books), but it stopped working and when I attempted to reconnect by downloading the program (numerous times), I kept getting a USB connection issue.... something about the USB being disabled due to too much power- not sure what this is because I don't have anything else connected to my Macbook Pro but the LeapFrog LeapStart. I also sought help from customer services, but representative could not help with this issue as well. This is a late review, but after months of sitting around, I just attempted to try to load the program again today, but still the same issue. Super frustrating and very disappointing! 1Started acting up when I changed the batteries, disappointed in longevityMix feelings about this product. Had it over a year with minimal travel usage. We usually leave it in our dining room on our kids table so they can do activities while mom cooks. We loved it when it worked but once the batteries died and I replaced the device with new batteries, it turns on and does nothing. It doesn't sense the stylus. It will on a random occasion after multiple attempts say one or two words when pointed on the stylus but then stops again. Changed batteries out a couple of times and unfortunately didn't help. Now, I have two disappointed kids with numerous of these books and told family to get more books for Christmas which will only be to their disappointment that they have no device to use them with.As for when the device worked, we would loved it and would recommend to any parent with kids under 7. My son is almost 5yo son and 3yo daughter love this. They take turns using it since I only had one of the Leap Start devices but numerous books. My daughter was heart broken after multiple attempts to try new batteries.I hate to give one start but given the longevity of this product for the price, it needs to last more than a year. I mean one year for a $45 device. Maybe some would say that's worth it but not when you shell out $10 - $15 on each of the books. I might of gotten a faulty device so maybe it's just poor luck on my part.UPDATE 7/1118We ve had our new leapstart book (this time I bought at big box store with a warranty) for 5 months now since the last broke, so far so good but I m still not sure on longevity still, however i have changed batteries a few times since we use ours alot and have had no issues. I am adding a star as my kids fight over this all the time. I ve got 6yo boy who LOVES it who is also my reader and 4yo girl who always wants what her brother has but genuinely love this thing. I struggle with getting my kids to play with their $100 toy they got for Christmas but love this thing and it s a plus for me since it s educational. So i still can t give this item as high of a star as I would like because of durability I would recommend it if you don t care if you have to replace it. I m glad I did but recommend getting some warranty because after investing in the books and how much my kids like It, you may want to get another. 2It s a great idea, but the company just can t seem to ...We purchased one of these from a chain retailer and it broke after a few months. We assumed it was because our kid was too rough on it. We then purchased another one on Amazon. We only let our son use it while being supervised and it still broke after less than a week. It s a great idea, but the company just can t seem to make a decent product. This one is headed for the garbage and we won t be purchasing another one. 1A hassleThere's no way to charge it so you have to change/charge the batteries daily which means you have to go get a screwdriver to open the battery compartment so it's a lot of fiddling around and waiting. It's also a bother to hook the computer up to make the books work. It's a neat idea and I wish it worked for us because my son liked it but the insanely short battery life is killer. It's not a video game and I don't want to have to restrict it to 30 minutes a day to keep from charging it daily. 3So far... excellentDespite all the negative reviews, I purchased this product for my 3 year old son. Week 3, everything works. We all love it. The technology is very clever - the stylus pen activates the speaker to read a page of a book, to say individual words, letters and games. The stylus pen is a little cumbersome in size but it s clever and my son can easily grasp it. The set up is straightforward but requires you to go online and download the books. It would have been nice to have had the system already loaded with the book collection but perhaps that s the manufactures way of enabling us to upload new books and technical updates, it s not an issue. We purchased the learning to read book collection and the several of the kindergarten (space) books. 8 books in total, it s not cheap. Excellent. Hours of fun guaranteed.I will note that this is the second product to have arrived. The first product delivered had its seal broken, given the negative reviews I did not want to take the risk it was a faulty one - return procedure was straightforward. I will update this post if we start experiencing any issues. So far nothing but joy. 4My poor 4-year-old has been so patient with this giftMy poor 4-year-old has been so patient with this gift. First of all, he has had it for 2 months without full functionality, meaning I can't download the new books that we already own. Secondly, the jack for the headset doesn't work meaning we all have to enjoy the noise. Lastly, this thing goes through AA batteries like a champ! I have been in contact with Support from LeapFrog to no avail. Still trying to get his replaced by Amazon or the manufacturer. 1
