Description

  • Ammonites were a group of marine molluscs related to modern octopus, squids and cuttlefish that first appeared in the Devonian Period (about 400 million years ago) and went extinct 66 million years ago at the end of the Cretaceous Period. Unlike octopus and squids and cuttlefish, ammonites have a large external shell that makes them look a bit like huge snails.
  • All ammonites have a large external shell. Most shells are coiled, but some species have a more complicated helical shape, while others have simple, straight shells. The shells are divided into many chambers, and the divisions to these chambers form complicated patterns on the outside of the shell.
  • The sort parts of ammonites are rarely preserved, but like living octopus, squid and cuttlefish, they had a large head that projected out of the opening in the shell. The head would have had a large brain and well developed eyes, and at least 8 tentacles.
  • This model is 5.25 inches long and 2.5 inches high. It is colored in inconspicuous brown and gray like modern octopus and squids.
  • The Ammonite is part of the Wild Safari Prehistoric World collection non-toxic and BPA free.

Customer Reviews

Nice Texture and Well PaintedGreat Model! I have it sitting next to a fossil ammonite on my office shelf to give viewers a visual as to how this little creature may have looked. It measures about 4.5" - 5" long (depends if the long flexible portion sticks straight out or bends down slightly), about 2.5" tall and about 2.5" wide at its widest part. It is painted very well with some great coloring choices. 5Well made and beautifully finished!I buy all the Safari Ltd Sea "creatures" for my 3 1/2 year-old son. He absolutely LOVES them. They're one of his favorite, if not favorite, toys. They are great for bathtime as water doesn't get into them and they stand up to time under water. All the animals look real and are done with even the most minute realistic details. Well made and beautifully finished! 5so coolthe paint job was great, the detail superb, and the size & weight made it super cool 5Cool mold. The tentacles aren't meant to be bendableCool mold. The tentacles aren't meant to be bendable, but are still flexible enough to interact with things. I took this picture of her in a box, with a bunch of Suan Zao Ren (jujube combination) in the background...I don't remember why, but given that ammonites propelled themselves by shooting jets of water out of their beaks, like modern cephalopods, she's probably stuck in there. 5Great for Dino collection. My son is 6 & loves all things prehistoric. This ammonite was a hit and great addition to his collection of Dino's. I was also surprised at how large it was, as I didn't read the measurements when purchasing, so it was perfect. 5... soft body parts of the animal and is a pretty good guess to how the ammonites lookedThis figure packs a lot of detail for the soft body parts of the animal and is a pretty good guess to how the ammonites looked, maybe the shell is a bit too drab in brown but the paint washes do a good job of bringing out the detail in the sculpt. 4Very happy with purchaseI'm very pleased with this little figurine I put it in my curio cabinet to show it off with my fossils I highly recommend 5Good price, quick deliveryGood price, quick delivery. One of the two long feeding tentacles was bent the wrong way so I have it displayed with a paper clip splint to position it the correct way. Also, it won't stay up by itself, so I bent a paperclip to make a U-shaped bracket. 4The cooler versionThe 2 middle tentacles move, while the rest of this guy is not possible. The high points are the eyes, and the Dark grey area, right where the squid like part meets the shell. You can't tell as much in the picture, but in your hand, those things really make this guy a standout show piece. I display him next to the orange one I also got on amazon. This guy is around 5 inches, while the orange one is like 6 or 7 inches. Even though this one was a little more expensive, and a little smaller, I actually like this one better, because of those small details. This is the premium version, and I highly recommend this one, as well as the less expensive orange one. 5GreatNice size, sturdy product, perfect for my paleontology loving kid's collection of prehistoric models 4
