Customer Reviews

SO PLEASED! I self diagnosed my 16-year-old blind cat with feline dementia. Now I have no idea if she actually has it Because it is a diagnosis of exclusion. But she has been blind for more than half of her life. And was spending every night howling and driving me crazy. She also now doesn t use the litter box even after clearing up a bladder infection. So I thought that giving her and activity to keep her mind engaged would be a good idea. I did get a more advanced game from the same company and it seemed too hard for her. So I got a easier version. She mastered it right away. And I m happy about that. She waits by this toy at night, knowing that she will have a chance to hunt for her treats. After having this game for a couple of days, the howling at night has stopped. I am very thankful for that. I would give five stars based on that alone!!!! 5A huge win for an intelligent catWell, as other reviewers have stated, this game is for intelligent cats. My cat has been having some moderate behavioral issues after the addition of a new kitten housemate (she was a solo kitty prior), and the veterinary behaviorist suggested a treat game as one strategy to help. The behaviorist suggested a treat game that had poor reviews, and after seeing the great reviews and how this game is for intelligent cats, I ordered the Mad Scientist game instead of her suggestion. My cat was fascinated with this from the moment I started putting it together. She didn't take any time at all to figure out how the game worked, and while she was busy with it, she was calm, focused, and her kitty counterpart watched her closely, fascinated with the game. I look forward to this gem helping our household move forward more peacefully. 5Good news/bad news (but mostly good)The good news is... my cat LOVES this toy! It's the only way she wants her food now. The bad news is that the cat treats keep getting stuck in the grooves so she can't get them out (poor, frustrated kitty). I think the manufacturer needs to do a slight design modification. At our last visit the vet said that my 7-year-old cat needed to lose a little weight. There are several cat toys on the market that dispense cat food one kibble at a time. Since my cat is very energetic and loves to hunt and play (which are essentially the same thing to a cat), I thought that she might enjoy a stick-your-paw-in-the-hole-and-eat-what-you-catch-type toy. I also figured that this would slow down her eating and hopefully allow her to be satisfied with less food. It worked. She loves the toy. She keeps working on it and working on it until she gets all the treats out, but that may take her several hours off-and-on. And she does seem to have lost a little weight already. The FAQ for this product lists a couple of brands of cat treats that are too big to get stuck in the grooves. I'm going to try some of those and see if they work. If it weren't for this annoying stuck-food problem, this toy would be perfect! 3Wonderful stimulationI unpacked this today and it has been an instant hit. The only thing my cat hasn't figured out yet is the cups. He is a lazy cat and has been more active playing with this toy than I have seen since he was a kitten. He quickly learned that it was easier to get treats & food out of the well if he removed the ping-pong balls, and that led to several games of chase all over the room. I'm having so much fun watching him and he's still having fun playing even though I just put food in after he figured things out with treats. I highly recommend this toy. It's now been a few weeks since introducing the toy and I can definitively say that this is my cat's favorite toy. He plays with all 3 I have for him in turn, but this one is ALWAYS played with until it is completely empty of food and treats. If you are only going to buy one toy for your cat make it this one. It is the most complex toy I've bought, so if it's the only toy you buy be aware that without introductory toys to get your cat used to the concept you may need to do a good bit of coaching to teach them how to use it (on the cups portion of this it took several sessions before my cat learned to use them on his own) but it is much enjoyed. Also be aware that the ping-pong balls will likely get ALL over your house. If you have a dog I recommend switching them out for balls that are safe for them to chew. We thankful caught my parent's dog before it crunched one into bitts. 5Poorly made product -- great concept, but horrible constructionUPDATE! Jan. 2017As time went on I came to really hate the money I spent on this product, as it was a waste. Found treats stuck far inside it that I didn't realize were there and my cats now ignore it completely as they have learned that they can't get the treats out by licking or pawing at them. They can figure the games out, but that's it. I ended up tossing the disgusting mess. Waste of money. Keep yours.*******Original Review -- when I first bought it a couple of months ago.Using the instructions I was able to quickly get my cats interacting with the game and learning moves the very 1st night. In general the game is great, but there's one big problem in my opinion. I was using a very common cat treat, so nothing unusual about it, but as the cats tried to paw treats from the various nitches they would get shoved under the inner edges of the game and impossible for the cat to retrieve and in several cases I almost didn't see them when I picked it up to clean. I could see food getting trapped in this game and causing smell and health hazards. I saw my cats get frustrated when a piece would quickly get under the edge and disappear or almost -- just a sliver of the treat sticking out that required the use of a my nails to get out. This happened repeatedly. Due to this reason, I can't give a more positive review. The concepts are great, but inner edges should seal and now have spaces large enough that treats get wedged in there or disappear all together. 1Mad Scientist: Not that great.I'd consider our cats to be "advanced level" foragers. They can open drawers, cabinets, zippers, and have quickly mastered every foraging/puzzle toy we've made or tried. This one is not a hit in our house. Some of our cats quickly mastered the idea of spinning the tubes to get the treats out, but the spikes on the bottom were a huge deterrent. They're a bit sharp around the edges, and too tall/close together for them to get their paws in to fish out the food/treats. They'd try several times, then get frustrated, and lose interest. I tried covering them with tape, to make a flat platform food could land on, but by this point they were completely disinterested in the toy, and this was a waste of money. 2Very popular with my catsMy cats love this toy and will spend time pulling regular dry food and treats our of this, while a full bowl of the same dry food sits ignored beside it. Only one of my three cats is food motivated, but they all enjoy this toy. The only problem is finding the ping pong balls they've knocked all over the house. 5Mad Scientist - engaging and challenging - different than the "digging" type puzzles that Trixie offers. Great toy and different type of challenge.I've got three other trixie cat food puzzles in addition to this one I just received. The "hunting" on the ground ones are hugely popular but this introduces a new challenge with having to spin the tubes. One of my cats is very motivated and likes challenges. It took him 5 minutes and under to pick up on it. Video attached.Start with the single tube and slowly work with them. You may want to use their own foot to pull down the foot as an instruction guide. 5At least they are really cute...Well, I thought my cats were pretty smart. They use their fountain. They take my socks out of the drawer and hide them around the house. They ask for treats and protect us from suspicious shadows and rogue breezes. This toy is way above their pretty little heads, though. I tried modeling, hand over paw assistance and explaining the process carefully in two languages (English and Cat) to no avail. I will likely relocate the toy closer to the sock drawer. Maybe some magic will occur. 2After a few modifications, it's purrrfect. My cat's love treat puzzles, but they figure them out quickly and then.... bored.I thought this would be a fun and entertaining addition to their collection so we gave it a try. They took right to it and BANG! It's knocked over! After several tries, we realized that they get their claws in the top trying to spin the tube. The toy is top heavy so naturally it falls over.My husband put together a platform to mount the toy to. The kitties sit on the platform while playing, so they support the toy and prevent tip overs. The carpet we covered the board with attracts scratching, so it's dual purpose. Now, they love it!I have to give 3 stars because we wouldn't have been able to utilize it if not for a handy hubby. Maybe my kitties are just treat aggressive, not sure. But it is a cute toy. 3
